I've been driving for over 35 yrs and have owned more cars than I could count and have always bought fuel from whoever is the cheapest in the area. Never had a "fuel related" problem.
Not disn. Just answering your question.
I do use 91-93 octane in the Vette tho as it's modified and tuned for it. Even that I buy from whoever is cheapest, usually costco.

That sounds like me. Cheapest fuel and the lowest octane too. I've tried different octanes and it ran the same on all of them so I'm not spending more on the higher octane stuff. I just shy away from "mom and pop" little stations but none exist around here anymore anyways.

I use Costco when I can. The station I go to (Mettawa, IL) is right off the interstate and almost always packed, even on a Saturday evenin when I filled it today.

I only stop at Chevron or 76 when in the C5. Once in a while I do stop at a local station that has 100 Octane at the pump when I want to feel a little extra oomph but at $7.99/gal those trips are few and far between.

Id be interested to see what exactly is in the gasoline for each brand. The octane rating is based on 100% isooctane scale, with 0% being equivalent to 100% heptane. I know you can raise the octane rating by adding benzene and other aromatic compounds that have a greater than 100 value to increase the octane rating. I'm always curious if my 91 octane is really 15% heptane grade with some benzene to boost it up to 91.

Gas leaves the refinery in a pipeline to the distribution centers. Then the additives are added for who ever the reseller is Chevron, Shell , Mobile or who ever has the branded gas stations. To separate the octanes a plug is sent down the pipeline. At least this is what I read about it.

I rotate between the top tiers -
This way I get best attributes ( and worst ) of each " marketed " brand
One week, the tank gets " invigoratated ", the next week " detergentinized ", followed by " oxygenized "
Here's to variety in the tank for a long life !

Notice you live in Florida and Michigan. I live 6 months in Florida and 6 months in Wisconsin. Where in Florida do you live? I live in Port Charlotte and the only non ethanol gas I could find is 90 octane sold at Marathon gas stations. Don't use it because it is only 90 octane. I only use Chevron or Shell 93 octane which has ethanol.

There are a number of independent stations around my area in Florida selling ethanol-free gas, Very popular because of all the boaters that want this.

For close to the last ten years i use costco fuel 93. They use gulf or a bp blend with their own additives. At times I will fill up with BP 93 that is Amoco fuels in my area. No way for me to get away from ethanol.

Canadian Chevron 94 octane has no ethanol, At least here in Vancouver. All the others do have it that i know of. I usually use Chevron 94 in the Vette but in my other cars I use whatever kind is nearest when my tank is empty. I have never in 40 years had a gas related failure. Lucky I guess.

The issue with the gas gage sending units was just another decision I had to make before buying the 04 cert in September. So, I decided that at every tank full of gas from Shell or Exxon (No Chevron stations near me), I add a bottle of Techron. It adds another $8.00 to the gas cost but it gives me some peace of mind hoping that I am preventing the issue.

I use Chevron and Shell, locally whenever I can. Have the added Techron.
When travelling, try to always use a good brand name, to include Mobil, Costo and others.
You need to try to avoid small mom & pop type stations, in small out of the way rural areas. It is possible that the fuel could set in the tank, underground, too long. It will accumulate moisture, and octane will deteriorate with time.
I was involved in a gasoline study, all over the mid west (Illinois, Iowa, Wisc, Michigan, and Minnesota) quite a few years ago (in the 80's), of true octane, at stations, compared to octane rating on the pump. It was a bit frightening, the rusults...
The results of true octane ratings, was much better (closer to advertized) at very busy stations, of major name brands.
Busy stations continually fill and refill their tanks, which 'should' lend it self to fresher gas. One can only hope, I suppose....
Also add a bottle of Techron, every few tankfulls.
