In getting for the winter, I had the oil changed and New York State inspection. I was quoted $260.00 to have the automatic transmission fluid changed and filter. My shop is using all OEM fluid. Is this a fair price?
Well, I have a manual tranny, but according to my spec sheet you're going to need 5 quarts of fluid for the auto.
What is it going to cost you for 5 quarts of OEM fluid? Around here, all of the shops charge $90 per hour for labour. Don't know what they charge in New York, but you'll need to add a charge for one hours worth of labour to the 5 quarts of fluid.
Add to that the cost of the filter you mentioned. Now you should have a idea of whether or not $260 is a fair price.
I understand that you do not want to get screwed, but nobody works for free and there are lots of underlying costs in running a brick & mortar business, ie; rent, wages, employment taxes, insurance, etc.
If you find a local shop that treats you right and cares for your car as if it were their own, then count your lucky stars.
And remember Murphy's Law: NO MATTER HOW LONG OR HOW HARD YOU SHOP AROUND FOR SOMETHING.......AS SOON AS YOU PAY FOR IT, YOU WILL FIND IT CHEAPER SOMEPLACE ELSE!
It is HIGH!
I had the AT transmission fluid and filter changed this summer and it was $190 before tax. With rear axle fluid changed as well my bill came to $306, including shop supplies, but before tax.
This was with OEM fluids!
Thank you to all the took the time to respond. Long Island is a bit pricey but this shop has always proven them selves 100% honest and stand behind everything they do.
I guess peace of mind comes at a price but one less thing I have to worry about.
