Default LS1 to LS3 2001 coupe problem

I have an 01 coupe. Due to oil pump failure, I need a new / rebuilt motor. I'd prefer a new crate LS1 but Chevy just doesnt make it anymore. I'd like to put an LS3 in it, but I'm told by the factory that it wont pass smog here in Calif even though it will bolt right in and is more efficient...go figure.

Has anyone put an LS3 in a C5 AND passes smog here in california?
Any help / advice?

And if this cannot be done and I gotta rebuild it...anyone know a good shop here in No. CA?
Thanks, T

As long as the engine is one year newer then the car, and of the same manufacture , it should pass in all 50 states.

I don't see how a crate long block would fail to pass smog. You are using all the emissions equipment from the old engine. How would the smog test shop even know it wasn't the same block?

Call Rick at Synergy in Livermore. He should know more and if nothing else, should be able to point you in the right direction.
