How does the air box cover come off. I removed the filter and i see the two rivits or whatever they are down on the inside of the cover but not sure how to get them out. Didn't want to pry on them to hard and break them. Thanks
you need to take a long screw driver ... go in between the front of the hood and the front facia... with a good little flash light you can see to pry near the edges of the filter air box and pop them off of the pins... there are some rubber grommets in the housing that fit over what you are calling the rivets (that may be what they look like from the inside) but you need to pry them off on the outside/front of the air box...
they can be pretty snug.... just work them off gently... and be careful not to bump, gouge, or damage your hood... I use my hand around the end of the screw driver to protect it from hitting the hood.. takes a pretty long and fairly large bladed driver or pry bar...
you can see the rubber grommets in this pic
the pins to the air box are almost identical to the ones on the air duct....
Putting a touch of lithium grease on the pins before you re install makes it a little easier....

Thanks, maybe a shot of crc or wd40 around the fastener before prying could help. I guess you u just push back in from inside after lubing them. Is there a likelyhood of damaging them on removal?

I believe you are talking about the two mounting pins that are located on the back side of the front frame rail The pins match up with grommets that are inside the airbox itself. You should be able to just grab ahold of the airbox at the back and pull towards the rear of the car. You may have to pull slightly upward at the same time to clear the forward and top radiator shrouds. If you still have the accordion air duct attached, then be sure it is not hanging up on anything as you pull on the airbox.
Mine has always popped off this way. I have never damaged the mounting pins either removing or installing the airbox - they are pretty tough.
sometimes the grommets stay on the pins...and you just have to pry or wrestle them off...just put them back in the holes in your air box and pop it back in place...
sorry I assumed you already had taken the air duct off... it will come out as a whole assembly as well...as vetteman jack instructed...should work for you... good luck

Grab on tight and yank hard, pulling slightly upwards as you do. It will come. You can then get a torx driver and unscrew the pins and you will see how it all fits together. Use some We 40 to help slip it all back together

Those so called pins are actually torx screws. You can use a ratchet and torx bit (cant' remember what size torx bit) and unscrew them out, very easy to do and no damage can be done. Take a flashlight and you can see the torx indent in the head of the screw (pin).
Looking from the top down on the inside of the box they did look like torx screws but wasn't sure. I may try to remove the torx screws before I try the man handling method. The reason I am considereing removing is to try and get more air to the engine, may try the zip lock mod or am considering getting a z06 box that has the bigger opening, I am concerned with water ingestion if I go with the zip tie mod but my car is never in the rain anyway so it may not matter. That small opening on the box is way to small IMO. Thanks guys for the help
Anything you do to that air box is better then stock. In 1997 when these car were first out, every publication that previewed the car stated that the air box was very restricted and should be replaced. They went as far as stating if gm ever changed the box that we should demand ours be changed also. Well we all know they never did.
Any of u guys that have upgraded and still have the stock box want to sell, i am thinking about modifying it by drilling holes or something similar. Thanks
