Yep, it sounds just like the normal noisy valve train. The one thing that doesn't sound right though is there is definitely not enough cam in there hehehe.
Thats actually a little reassuring. On my 02, between like 100 and 150 degrees on water temp, I get a slight "tap tap tap tap tap" coming from the #1 or #2 cyl area. It sounds like you have the same when the camera is on the drivers side. If I rev it a bit, it goes away, then as it idles for like 10 seconds or so it slowly comes back. Outside of these temps it is non existent. I cant tell if its piston slap or a wrist pin, but I would think I could rule out rod or main bearing since oil pressure is normal (35psi hot idle, 40+ cold idle and 55+ at 3000+ rpm...plus a great report from blackstone labs on my last oil change (no insoluble metals)). I take it easy on it inside these temps, but drive it like I stole it at full temp and she purrs like a kitten.
PS: I also agree it sounds like there isnt enough cam in there...there isnt enough in mine either. Im working on changing that this winter lol. (the salt just flew here in Northeast PA, so she is parked now)
It might not be obvious, but there's a cut in the recording where I switched to the passenger side, where the valvetrain noise seems to be a little more noticeable. These engines do have that characteristic "sewing machine" sound and it can be hard to distinguish from true issues sometimes, so thanks for the reassurance guys.
I can't add more cam, as much as I'd love to. It'd put me in street modified or modified or some other crazy class for SCCA autocross... and to be honest, on a tight course like autocross, 400hp is more than enough
Here's my last/first/only blackstone report so far (I didn't mean to change oil at 1200 miles, I just changed it because it felt like time and then realized I goofed when I looked at the odometer). I just sent in a second sample with 2k miles on it, will see what they say.
I will tell you having the work and power I do sucks for auto-x, but that is all I have for racing where I live. I run SSM and am always 4ish seconds back because I don't run slicks and have no aero or suspension work done.
As others have stated, where are the Fuel Rail Covers?
In a box in a cabinet in my garage. Lol why do people care? :S
Car successfully completed over 25 autocross runs today, so I'd say it's running fine still. Had to quit early because I was running low on gas. Aparently "low fuel" comes on with a red Christmas light if you do two laps on reserve fuel
