Just did my first oil change since buying my FRC - the stuff that came out looked like crap and it had a Sams club filter - glad I did the deed. I was shocked that for a 'performance motor' the filter was no bigger than what's in my 4runner - what gives?

Yeah, those PF-46's are small....ground clearance I guess ?

I would be more concerned about the oil looking like crap.

... I prefer wix or factory gm filters... you might take a peek under one of the valve covers to see what kind of condition the inside of the motor is in... you would be surprised how many people really don't take good care of these cars

I've seen some pretty messed up engines in my lifetime of rebuilding them when a customer complains about them....not realizing it's all their own fault. I've had to clean the "varnish" out, to full blown oil MUD build up so thick it made itself into modeling clay.
Sad to know there are car owners so oblivious to why they need to change it frequently.
I would highly recommend that the OP do this and change it again after <1000 miles.
If the old oil was crud, ca bet that crud is in the engine. Run the new oil for a while, drain it, and flush it with something like the Amsoil flush as pictured here. It will not clean the engine, but will make it in much better than it is now.
Afterwards use only a high quality synthetic. I always use Amsoil. Mobile 1 is good as well.
NAPA "Gold" filters are Wix, fyi - even use the same numbering system. I use either those or the Mobil 1 filter.
Using an engine flush is a good idea if things are crudded up. You may have to run through a couple of cycles. If it's really messed up, in all probability the oil filter is clogged, so put on a new filter, then run the flush cycle, then drain, another new filter and repeat the whole process after a few hundred miles.

The car did sit on the dealers lot for 90 days - age could have something to do the condition of the oil. I will monitor the clean stuff to see how quickly it gets dirty. Thanks for the link to the Amsoil motor flush.
I know its really ridiculously old fashioned
but i am still a 3000 mile oil change guy. Cant get it
out of my system going back to 55 chevy pickup
in the 60's

Synthetic oil can go a lot further than 3000 miles. You know you are just wasting money, right.

Some of the filters that are stocked in our shop are half the size of a PF46. The smallest one I've seen looks like it would hold only about 6 ounces. Kinda makes me wonder if some of those tiny ones are really worth having a filter....
Only problem with this product is that you have to have an Amsoil account / membership. I did it for several years and came to find out with the shipping and disposal fees it's cheaper to just buy Mobil 1 or Castrol locally.
But don't get me wrong, Amsoil is a good product.

I was suggesting that he flush out his engine because his oil looked like crap. There are many products out there to do that. This was just one. For his oil I would go with Mobil1, too.
