The metal ring you bought is what GM should have installed on the car in the first place. It certainly would have been less likely to break like the plastic one.
I repaired the plastic ring with a little 5 minute epoxy and a couple pieces of plastic I cut out of a plastic dish I got from Olive Garden that was used for take out orders. It's good as new now. and been working for a couple years now with numerous removals.

If all the plastic parts were replaced with metal ones, the car would have cost 2 grand more.. and would have added 500 lbs.. on another note.. My shift boot ring has been in and out a dozen times, and still works as new... looks good as new too.

This is what draws the inner engineer out of many.
Its always nice to fix a problem using around the house parts that cost nothing..it gives you a sense of accomplishment, and in many cases make the part even stronger.
Nice work

AS I've said 1524 times over the last 13 years here is : If the C5 was perfect, none of us would be able to afford it.
I was shot down by my project manager for a revision that would have cost 0.07 cents per copy ( with seven parts per unit, it would have added 0.49 cents to the cost to manufacture. ) The rev did nothing to reduce weight, so the chances were slim to get it passed, but would have made a nicer looking part.
