I occasionally see threads comparing the '01-'02 headliner vs the '03-'04 headliner. I recently purchased an '02 headliner to replace in my '04 Z and thought I would show the differences for future comparisons. As you can see, the '04 has the "hump" that reduces head room by a fair margin. I was also surprised to see all the stuff on the back of the '04 vs the '02.
Yeah back in the day this was talked about Ad nauseam.. the DOT changed rules back then in the USA, hence the change in headliner. FWIW most prefer the early headliner, it was hard to find a used one.. You lucked out. Mine made creaks and squeaks until I took out the plastic crating, then silent as a lamb. lol I'm only 6'0 but at times the back of my head would touch the headliner and plus the squeaking. I couldn't at the time locate a used one and if I did the shipping was crazy expensive so I settled for my 03 liner without plastic. Prefer the 03-04 Z mostly cause of the C6 fuel system and no fuel gauge issues and inaccurate needle readings etc.. JMO
@Markolc1981 Here's one difference I was never aware of until now between production years. Funny, too, because I was encountering the headliner today while working in the car. With my Corbeaus at a proper upright angle for safe track work I was fully pressing into the liner with my skull. That may remain the case with a flatter top like your FRC when it comes to the center rooftop, but this is worth looking into.
I did also recently identify the difference between A-pillar types. The '03 has a honeycomb support pattern on the back side and slightly different countours overall. If I can find the pictures I took on my cell phone I'll post.
I feel like a hillbilly....the headliner in my 2K coupe kept falling down no matter what I used to keep it attached to the targa top. After falling on my head going down the road right after I thought a huge flying creature came in my open window almost scaring me into the ditch it was "removed" in anger and dispatched to the trash can. The inside of the targa is bare now until I figure out what to do, a spray can is looking better all the time.
3M adhesives are usually among the strongest. If not a spray adhesive then there is no harm using their strip caulk. Just as sticky as orgavyl but easier to apply in thin strip form. Line up your headliner, gently place it and double check alignment before pressing home.
I've been thinking man made materials instead, like a suoer dark black suede.
Sitting in the car earlier I see that the bump on the 03 is directly above the driver head. I definitely see how earlier headliners are a better choice. Some completely crushable foam is not preventing anyone from head injury.
I’ve always wondered what was behind the hump, glad I found this thread. Wondering if I can remove the plastic spacer (for lack of a better term) and use steam to “reshape” the headliner flat, then trim to fit - hmmmmm….0
