hello. I have a 2002 that doesnt have these issues BUT a very close friend is wanting to purchase a 2000 does that year model have the ebcm / and the battery leak onto the computer problem. Im thinking he needs to get 01 -04 so let me know. Thanks
I believe the EBCM problem is an issue for pre-2001 model years, but the battery leaking issue affects all years.
There were many issues that were addressed in the later years and I think any potential purchaser would be advised to look for a 2001 or later car to take advantage of these "fixes". And by the 2003/2004 model years not only were all the fixes done, but most features that were previously options were now standard equipment, so the advice would be to look for the later cars.
I agree with you on the ebcm...but the battery issue is a non issue.........you can buy a absorbent pad to help out with that threat and monitor the battery.
Now for the EBCM..... when it goes out your hosed....been there done that. BUT I know a couple of guys who scored an early C5 cheap put electrical tape over the orange light and just drove it.
They said hey I grew up without those nannies and I can drive without them.
Majority opinion here is to always buy the newest, best car you can afford. All c5's are subject to the acid problem if you have a lead acid battery instead of an AGM battery. Lot of nice early cars to chose from still, and are worth a close look especially if on a tight budget.

I think your questions have been answered - a lead acid battery can leak down onto the wiring and computer box right below the battery tray, but as mentioned a battery absorbent mat can help, as can getting an AGM battery.
Look at the sticky referenced by allred - lots of good info in there for C5 buyers.
