I'm not sure I understand what u mean by tabs, there are several write ups on changing shift *****, it's a pain in the ars the first time for sure, just don't let it beat you, soak it down with some WD and keep at it, it will come eventually

When I had my 6-speed, I just clamped a pair of vice grips on the top of the key and gently tapped up on the side of the vice grip with a hammer. The key came right out. Depending on where the break in the key is, you may or may not be able to get the vice grip to catch the top of the key. If it won't catch, perhaps a thin flat blade screwdriver would catch and help you get the key loose. Just be careful so as to not damage the leather on the shift ****.
Thanks guys yea i worked on it...well around it it still hasnt come off and i gave up for a bit but in the process of installing the new shifter i dropped a socket in the tunnel....
They can be a bear. When I went to change my shifter, I found the key would not come out - tried vise grips, no luck. With the whole unit on the bench, I found that whoever had put it in, had literally splayed out the top part of the shift lever by hammering the key in when it was not properly lined up. Result, shift lever irrevocably jammed in the ****. Sometimes you just need a hacksaw.
