Default 2001 M6 transmission fluid change

My om indicates 4.1qt. For complete rebuild, how much does it hold to just change it out or is it the same amount? What is best fluid to replace, amsoil or royal purple, and what device do u use to put fluid back in. Not much room so it can't be poured in. thanks gentlemen

If you opt for the AMSOIL, this is the proper fluid and the one I use in my 02 Z06 at the track:
AMSOIL Torque-Drive Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid (Product Code ATD1G)

Tranny capacity is about 3.5 qts, so you'll need 4 qts.

You'll need a pump which can be found at auto part stores. Something like this:
AMSOIL Hand Pump (Product Code G2039)

From what I gather this AMSOIL can't be purchased at the local auto parts store, is this correct? This is what advance auto parts told me. Thanks for the responses.

Running plain old Valvoline Dex/Merc, meets the old GM DEX III spec and works just fine. Unless you are tracking your car, I suspect you do not need anything more technical (and pricey). Got mine from Advance Auto. You can get a $5 hand pump there as well. Plus they will take your old stuff for recycling.

Go to Mark's page ToqueZ06.com and towards the bottom of the page, he has a write-up on changing the fluid in a manual tranny.

http://www.toquez06.com/tranny.html

On this page there is a link to purchase all the Amsoil products you need. I chose to add the 6-month membership ($10 option on the Amsoil page) that saved me $14 on the gallon of Torque-Drive fluid. Plus I got the 25% discount on the hand pump and 2 quarts of Severe Gear for the differential. All for less than a $100 bill shipped to my door. It appears there is a distribution center in Arlington that you can pick it up at but shipping was only ~$7, so I chose to have it shipped.

Good Luck!

Generally true. AMSOIL's corporate policy prohibits national chains signing up accounts to purchase and sell AMSOIL (so you will never see it at Walmart). They do allow local or franchised businesses to carry it, so you will sometimes find it at NAPA stores which are largely local owned.

That said, I sell to forum members daily and can have it shipped to your house direct from AMSOIL. Drop me a PM if interested.

Thanks for the help, i went with valvoline synthetic, only held 3.2 qtrs. I checked car and was perfectly level, filled until fluid ran out, installed plug took a short drive, removed plug and fluid weeped out so i can only assume it is full. One thing that surprised me when i removed the plug initially was i got at least about a half cup of fluid, it must have made fluid over the yrs. Go figure

This is pretty common and I think it results from the fluid expanding as it heats up. Generally we drain with the fluid somewhat warm and fill with it relatively cold.

Does the Vette have paper lined synchro's or carbon fiber?

If it has paper, with the synthetic fluid damage them? I know it will on a Fbody trans.

I believe you are ok. All searches that I found back when I was researching the same info (mine is an 03) resulted in the paper synchros are in the 97-00 vettes, 01 and up are not.

The Valvoline Synthetic fluid I have seen is Dex VI, not Dex III. You do NOT want to put Dex VI in your manual transmission. It may be labelled as Dex III compatible, but that only applies to auto transmissions. GM issued a bulletin to that effect when Dex VI came on the market. You either need a specific Dex III fluid, such as Valvoline Dex/Merc or GM's own Manual Transmission Fluid

You will be fine! Don't worry. On your next change, try the Amsoil Torque Drive, you will be amazed at how much smoother your shifts will be! Zuti

It's a Dex VI not a Dex III. GM does not recommend this in a manual tranny. You either need a true Dex III or GM fluid 88861800. Which seems to be just a DEX III relabelled.

The wording you are looking for, which is on the plain old Valvoline non synthetic Dex/Merc states: "It is recommended for automatic transmissions for pre 2006 General Motors...".

That means it is to Dex III spec which is what you need. And per Tremec, it is all you need.

Mine shifts just fine running non syn Valvoline Dex/Merc. Better than it did with the synthetic I drained out. And you can buy it buy the gallon - about $27/28 per.
