Hello. I recently put a new clutch in my C5 and am now having a problem with shifting into first and second gears. Sometimes the gears "aren't there." I can try to put it into first but it will not go, and sometimes first acts like third. I know it's supposed to spring sideways in neutral to stay between 3rd and 4th but the 1st and 2nd side doesn't spring back into the middle. any ideas or suggestions? what other information should i include

It sounds like they may have done something to your shifter box when they reinstalled it. They should have tested it before they gave it back to you. If they are reputable they need to make it right and not tell you it needs more repairs. Let us know what happens

-I- recently installed the clutch. what exactly do you mean by that, what can be done to it? seems like a pretty simple mechanism.
Can you post video of the problem? Whenever you do your clutch (I just did the whole shebang last year), you should re-attach the shifter's stick before you bolt the transmission and diff and torque tube back up (but with them held at the appropriate height by the tranny jack), and with the stick in place, make sure it deftly moves through all the gears correctly. Also, obviously, the torque specifications for a job like this are of utmost importance, so if something's amiss, they might be to blame. I'd love to see a vid, I'm struggling to visualize what you mean here.
If the shifter box was not properly aligned while the actual gearbox was in neutral, things will not be correct. Or, if they did not properly tighten the pinch bolt at the back of the shifter box, there will be excessive left to right play in the shifter.
If you have to fix it, pull off the trim pieces to expose the shifter box and work it through the gears while you can see what is happening.
