1998 C5 Automatic Transmission deep sump pan and service.
Hello All! Hope everyone had great holidays. I did a search and really didn't find what i was looking for. I have a 1998 Corvette with an automatic transmission. It's time to do a service and I was wondering what you all think. I'd like to get a deep sump pan for the additional fluid cooling, but I am on the fence on how to go about this.
I found a deep sump pan from PML. I like what I read so far, but I am just curious what you all think. Any suggestions with brand of deep sump? Those of you with an auto, what are you running? What type of fluid is best? Any and all info would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you,
Jorge

I have a '98 A4 also. My car is box stock. I just had a full 100K service done on the car about a year ago. So I'm running OEM fluid. I don't seem to have any problems so far. I don't drive the car very hard. The nearest freeway to my home is about a hundred miles away. Most of my driving is two lane road stuff. Also, in Oregon, if you get caught going over a hundred, they impound your car, and you don't get it back.

Why do you feel you need additional fluid cooling?
The stock setup seems to work just fine. In fact, it seems our transmissions are virtually trouble-free.
Now, if you were going to track the car (or God forbid pull a trailer), that would be a different story. You could use the additional cooling that a deep pan would offer.

Thank you for the responses so far. I don't plan on tracking the car. Maybe 1/4 mile just to see what it can do since I did some engine mods. I definitely do not plan on doing any type of towing.
I know for a fact that the additional fluid does help prolong the transmission life along with cooler temperatures. The pan from PML is 1/2" deeper versus the stock one. They claim that clearance is not an issue.
Anyone out there running a deep sump? If so, what has been your experience with it? What type of fluid are you running?
Thank you,
Jorge

Well unfortunately I didn't get the responses from this thread as I was expecting. Regardless, I thought I would share anyways.
I pulled the trigger on the Deep Sump Pan from PML. Installation was simple, fitment from the manufacturer just as described. Nice Product overall!
Thank you,
Jorge

I finally took a 180 mile round trip. Trip consisted of going from 2600' to sea level and back. Temps did not exceed 180*. In my opinion, the product worked as described. Grant it, it's winter time, but then again I live in So Cal.
Thanks,
Jorge
Thanks,

Hey Jorge
I was curious. I could not see from the.pics but is there a fill plug in the upper hole of the pan that is above the drain plug? I am assuming there is so as to add fluid to the proper level. I am going to add this for the same purpose. I am running a stall converter which produces more heat. I have installed a B&M trans cooler but would like the extra cooling the larger sump offers.
