There is a guy who runs a speed shop locally that told me to alwasy shift to 1st before dropping it into Reverse. Today I was reading the owners manual for my 72 and it was saying the same thing.
Anyone know why this is?

For a transmission that does not have a synchronized reverse gear YES. Our transmissions have a synchronized reverse gear so it's not required. It does nothing for us.
I have always done this. I guess it is a product of learning to drive stick in a 78 chevette. Roll in 1st slightly, depress the reverse button and it would slide right into reverse.
