I installed a Chrome catch can similar to the one in the picture below. What is the best or recommended way to check and empty the excess oil? Should I open the petcock valve on the bottom (by screwing it up, closer to the can) and let it drain out into a container or should I remove the can completely after disconnecting the hoses and unscrewing the top cap?

If you've got the room, I'd just place a plastic cup under the petcock valve, open the valve and drain the trapped oil. I wouldn't go to the trouble of removing the catch can from the car, at least not every time. Perhaps every so often remove it just to inspect that everything inside is OK (not sure what the inside of that product looks like as I have an Elite Engineering one on my car).
Question is, what does the manufacturer of the catch can recommend?

Thanks. I bought it from CCA and I'm not sure who the actual manufacturer is. The only instructions I have were regarding the installation.
The petcock failed on mine on it's second use, it was replaced with a miniature ball valve and barb fitting so that a small hose can be attached and the oil drained into a container.
I have one very similar to yours if not the same one. I couldn't get mine in chrome so I sent it out for the chroming. I just open the valve on the bottom and drain. Have never taken it off since install.

Bingo
Or
- Unscrew the top
- Roll up some paper towels
- Insert into the can and let absorb
You should only get 2-3 oz per oil change for street driving - Track
driving can get you 2-3 oz per session

Thanks. My set-up is very similar to yours including braided hose lines. My challenge is that the can petcock is right above the one braided line so it's a tight fit. I think I can work around it, however once the petcock is screwed up towards the can, how much flow should I expect? I want to make sure I don't make too much of a mess.

Thanks Chip. I use mine for street driving and the occassional spirited exercise on back roads so I'm not expecting a lot. I just don't want to make a mess.
R these cc worth anything or just another fancy mod?
They provide an outlet for unused oil deposits that would normally route through your intake/exhaust. Below is a link that sums up the benefits of oil catch cans.
Thanks for all the feedback guys. I was able to work around the braided hoses I installed and able to squeeze in a plastic dixie cup underneath the petcock in order to screw it up closer to the bottom of the can and drain the captured oil. I only needed a shop rag to wipe off a little bit of residue. Pretty simple process and I'm glad I didn't need to remove the can or disconnect the hoses. Below are some pics as to what I captured in weekend street driving since my last annual oil change.
Also remember, there is a set screw on the bracket, you can loosen
the set screw and lift the can up a few inches without uninstalling.
That should give you enough room to get a Dixie cup under without
to much effort

Chip
That is exactly how I empty mine.
I don't even bother with the set screw .
I leave it loose on the can.
The can easily slides up enough to get loosen the pet **** & put a container under it for draining.

Sorry I didn't respond sooner. I work the graveyard shift and sleep during the sun up time. You did it the way I do though.

This is what was in my intake when I bought my car it had 5300 miles, I have not yet checked the intake after installing my catch can, I have run it for 3 summers.
