Default Rear Hatch Lift Support Struts

I recently ordered lift supports for the rear hatch of my 1999. They showed up 33.6" long. I went to install and found that to be almost double the size of the ones on the car. I took a rough measurement of about 17". I've looked at several auto parts web sites since and they all seem to have a 33" strut listed.

Does anyone know the correct exact length? Anyone replace theirs and have a good replacement manufacturer and part number?

Coupes and Hardtops (includes the Z06) use different length struts. You don't say which you have, but keep in mind coupes FAR outnumber hardtop models, so it's more common to see coupe parts listed.

There are a wide number of sources available for these. Try Rock Auto, etc

BTW, convertibles and hardtops share the same part numbers as the deck lid is the same for both cars.

Yes, it is the hatch back coupe. Rockauto is one of the ones I tried. The ones that do show trunk lid or cargo cover are 10-11". The two that say hatch have no length mentioned. One of those two gives a description of AMS brand "Hatch Lift; Rear Right; Hatchback; Convertible" That makes no sense. The other one is an AC Delco "Hatch Lift; Left; Hatchback" So they have only the left or right depending on the brand? Just weirdness with getting the right parts.

Other websites say hatch lift support and have the 33.6" strut. That is why I am trying to get the correct length to get the right part.

OK, let me check a GM source for a GM part number, and it will be a good starting point.

OK, GM lists a left and a right for the coupes, I'm thinking based on the location of the push-on connector tab at the top for the rear window heater ground cable connection. They are the same price.

In addition to overpriced GM pieces, there are several ebay vendors selling these at a much better price, including SMC Performance, Inc. I have bought one or two items from them in the past and they are reliable. Item #201256411763.
"Strong Arm" is one of the more popular manufacturer brands out there and have been around a long time. If you have questions as to length, contact them first. To me, 17" sounds way short for a coupe, but I have a Hardtop.

Thanks for your responses. After searching eBay a bit I think I figured it out. One of the vendors had a couple of informative images. The C4 hatch has the 33.6" struts. The C5 uses 17.1" struts.

Aha! The plot thickens.......

Many AP stores have the ability to cross reference the GM part numbers, so that's another thing.

StrongArm is the company that makes the struts. Go to their website and you'll get the right struts and the best price.
