Ok , so I have a 2001 Z06 and I am thinking cam swap again , I would like a little HP gain , but it is not that important as I do not race it or anything , I would like some nice idle , I guess more muscle car sounding , any feedback would be great , ! I don't really want to get into valve train upgrades other then maybe springs etc , or something that requires major tuning .

Martin at Tick, Ed at Flowtech Inductions, Brian Tooley at BTR, Geoff at EPS, and Pat G at Guerra Group are all solid guys who can set you on the right path
you have to tune any cam. guys have gotten buy on an OE tune using the hotcam but it's not optimal and we have no idea how the engine aged. that's also a small cam worth maybe 15-20hp max over stock without other mods
220-230@.50 is the most common street duration. if you want a tiny bit of lope have it cast on a 112LSA rather than 114-115
i could swear someone makes a 228 on 112 with around .600 lift. that would be a hot street cam

That's about what I'm looking for on my 03 Z, I want some more power, but don't feel like shelling out $1500-$2000 on headers, plus install and tune, you could spend less than half that and get the sound of a cam plus about 30whp. I'm still going to add headers, but that'll be next year... Spent too much $$ already & had other things to address first (nittos, bilsteins, end links, sway bars,)
$750 for TSP catless headers. no install issues and makes awesome power. With a cam it will be worthwhile to do springs, timing chain, oil pump, and while your in there an UD pulley. Doing it all myself im looking at about $1200 for a cam/accessory swap

Everyone has opinions on this, and you can do whatever you want w/ your own car, but I'm not putting anything but stainless headers on my Vette.
this is the cam i was thinking of. makes great numbers and seems to be tame enough on the valvetrain that guys aren't having to redo guides and springs in 10k miles. you can have it cast 111-115lsa depending on what you want it do.
BUT
a non split duration requires a good exhaust to really do well AND if you install this cam on the OE exhaust, tune it, then when you get headers you will have to retune
best to buy all the parts and install & tune at once...just let stuff sit on the shelf and buy it piece by piece
if you wanted to do this on a budget you could buy this cam and headers for 1600, port the heads yourself $60 in supplies and $400 for a tune.
This is whats in my plans too to do to mine Z im still kind of deciding if i should port the heads or not don't want to spend to much money on them so if do i want to port them my self but on the other thought i have yet to talk to local shop here and see what they say but im definitely will be doing all the work myself except for tuning. ..I don't mean to steal this thread but what u guys think?

porting ls heads isn't hard if you either A have prior experience or B watch the standard abrasives video and just to the sanding roll treatment. most SBC heads will pick up at least 10% doing the short turn radius and bowl blend. beings this cam is .588 lift you really don't need to add substantial cc's to the heads, just increase flow. most the time the exhaust is where you can really pick up flow.
it does take around 30 minutes per port though and that adds up to 8hrs of labor
