Last week I upgraded from my torch red 95 to a torch red 2000. I absolutely love the C5 as it is a different beast than the C4 was. The only issue with the C5 is the ABS and traction control lights staying on along with the messages in the info center. After reading about this being a common and expensive fix in a 2000 model I became very worried. As I started to investigate the issue I figured I would start simple and check all of the fuses. Long story short, the 40amp ABS fuse was blown. $3.99 later, the warning lights are now off and the messages are no longer running across my info center! Whew.....
Brake fluid service on the early cars is critical. I take mine to the dealer every 2 years and have a complete flush done using the Tech II. Moisture collects in the brake fluid and settles in the pump, which causes corrosion, which causes failure. The Tech II will exercise the ABS pump and do a complete fluid change. My 2000 has 135K on it and never have had an issue. Since it is also my daily driver, I take the opportunity to exercise the ABS pump when it rains, both by brakes and by activating the traction control.

I have Autoenginuity for my laptop. It has the program in it to do that as well. I do all of our vehicles every year. What is strange is the procedure is different for each one. The C5 and Malibu are the easiest. The truck is a little more involved. The C6 is a pain to do. Way more steps. But I think it works better.

Something else you guys with the early EBCMs can try that worked for me on my old '98 (as opposed to my "new" '04, just mean it was my old car, don't be getting all upset ) is to disconnect and clean the contacts of the plug where it plugs into the unit down on the rear end. I had issues with mine when I first got the '98, disconnected this plug and found a bunch of corrosion, hit it with a bunch of contact cleaner, let it dry, then put some dielectric (light bulb) grease on the contacts and never had another blip out of it the rest of the time that I owned the car (about 3 more years and 40K miles later).
