I apologize if this is a repeat thread. I am new to this forum and tried the search function for similar topics before posting this.
I own a 2002 Corvette. It has the stock stereo and 12 disc CD changer. The stereo plays both the radio and CD's fine and has a good sound. There is one issue I'm curious about. I can have a CD playing when I shut the car off. When I turn the car back on, either the same CD starts playing, the radio is on or it reverts back to CD 1, song 2. There is no pattern. It's always a guess as to what music will play when I turn the car on. Has anyone else had this issue? Is this normal?
Also, does anyone know how to skip from one CD to the next? Right now to go to a different CD, I hit the random button.
I'm a turbine engine mechanic, give me a wrench and I'm good. That being said, I'm mostly clueless on the electrical side.

I can answer these questions based on how my 98's radio/cd/12 disc changer has always operated.
Question #1 - Normal operation (battery power has not been disconnected) the stereo will always come back on to the state it was when the radio turned off. This includes CD operation. If I shut the car off while CD5, track 8 was playing, When I restart the car the stereo will pick back up at the same CD and track. The same holds true for both the single CD player in the head unit, and if the stereo is in the AM/FM mode. I do not recall what happens if I turned the head unit off via the radio power button before I turn the ignition key to the off position, but I suspect it will work the same as above.
Question #2 - Button #5 controls the 12 disc CD players ability to move to the next CD, ie CD1 to CD2, and on...
As to your issue with the random state of the system when restarting the car, would suspect the 12 disc changer going bad. One way to check this out is to physically disconnect the 12 disc changer from the system by removing the cable at the unit in the rear compartment. If your not familiar with the connector, it might be easier to remove the screws from the holding bracket and flip the changer over to disconnect the cable. Then see if head unit restarts all the time either in radio mode or single CD mode depending on where you had when it was powered down. I'm on my second 12 disc changer and the units are a known source of problems as they age.
If I get a chance today I will see how the system functions when turning it on/off strictly with the radio head unit power button. Have some bad icing here in NC this morning, but will try to get to it later.

Thanks for the information and advice. I will test the CD changer in the next couple days. I understand about the weather, I'm from NC too.

Ok, the trees in the area are at least cooperating for now. I went out to the garage and tested the head unit on/off button operation. It works the same as if shut down via the ignition key. One suggestion before removing the 12 disc cd unit power cable, take out the cd magazine and see how the head unit reacts, does it still randomly restart in radio mode or single cd mode or does it remain in the mode it was when shut down.

Where are you located in NC?
mac
I'm on the east coast. Around the New Bern, Cherry Point, Morehead City area. You?
I think the memory setting of the different FOBS will also affect how the radio /Cd player will come up. If you unlock with a particular FOB is should be the same as when you set the memory last time for that FOB.
Of course you may not be using the FOB at all Just thought I'd mention that . I know the FOB I use has different station set than the one the wife uses.

Thanks Mac! You were right! With no CD's in the changer, the head unit functions fine. It starts up in whatever mode/song it was on when the car was shut off. Looks like it's time for me to get a back up for when the CD changer completely quits.
