Default Transmission Issue

1998 with 133000 miles started acting kind of funny and then got worse. First gear seems to work fine, but after about 25 mph, it won't accelerate or hold at a speed less than 3000 rpm. Close to 4000 rpm to hold speed at 65 mph. The high transmission fluid came up at 210 F. Any idea what may be causing this would help. Thanks so much.

Sound to me like bands and clutch packs are worn and slipping....It may be time for a rebuild.

I would first check transmission fluid level. With the car lifted, engine running and transmission fluid temperature at 122 F make sure fluid level is at the fill hole bottom. Do not open the fill plug unless the engine is running, close it up before shutdown.

Then there have been a few reports of transmission fluid filters having a leak, making them unable to hold the vacuum of the transmission pump when engine is running. This condition starves or partially starves the trans from fluid. Perhaps a fluid and filter change with extra care to make sure the new filter is good before going through a rebuild.

The transmission guys can check for internal fluid leaks with the trans in the car, but maybe not discern a fillter problem without removing the filter for examination.

Fluid level and or filter never dawned on me.....so... with what Jim said. Get that checked first
