Default Another "rattle" thread.

Guys I have searched and searched and read and read and I can't find anything that I believe pertains to my "rattle". Upon hitting hard bumps I hear something in the rear hatch that basically sounds like a stack of plates wobbling. It's not a loud ding or metallic sound really. I have tried shaking the aftermarket catback and I can't seem to reproduce it. My hatch seems securely closed. I have also taken everything out of the storage compartments.

I know many people attribute rear rattles to the axles or swaybar links but I don't believe this is the issue because I have heard the wobble vibrate under droning and low rpm starts.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I'd check your exhaust mounts, mainly the one at the mid to rear section but also the one at the front of the mid section to bellhousing.

Did you just shake the exhaust or did you try hitting it with your hand? I have had muffler guts come loose and you can't really hear it unless you actually hit it with something to make it vibrate a little. I was also going to suggest the sway bar end links as well but you've already said it probably wasn't those.

I think the cats are the issue..take to a good muffler shop and have them help you with your problem. Some of these guys are real good. Good luck, Rob

If the cats are not it, I would mention that for two years I chased a rattle, only heard going over a certain bump on my way home. I swore it was in the right rear of the car, with a sound similar to what you describe.

I finally discovered that it was the top. I cured it three years ago by lowering the plates on the windshield bow where the two top latch posts plug in. Lowered them both all the way the adjustment would allow. No more rattle.

You access the two plates by, with a non marring tool, gently prying the windshield trim back enough to get a 10 mm wrench in to the two bolts on each side.

How about the seat belts, Does it rattle with the seat belt unlocked as compared to the lock position.

Thanks everyone for the input so far. I do have a good exhaust guy and I am going to take it over to his shop and get it on the lift when I can get time off through the week. This is a new vette to me I have only had it a few months and am still chasing down some stuff.

The seat belts being locked/unlocked hasn't shown any difference so far.

I will check the top but I have never had it off as of to now because of the weather here.

The exhaust is stock other than a BB Bullet that I had my exhaust guy install it and I was there shooting the bull with him the entire time.

It does seem to be more prominent when the ambient temperature is colder. It doesn't seem to make a difference how long the car has ran but if it's 25 degrees or under its prominent.

It is a coupe with a removable acrylic roof panel. Some call it a targa top.
