Well you probably guessed what happened...I met three running together so I slowed to about 30 mph and they were only doing about the same...
but when I got home I had 15 to 20 chips in the hood and that many in the windshield ... weird two in the trunk deck. Any how I went by one of best pros in town and he said....mmmm not much you can do...WTH!
So, I decided I'd just do it myself....got some 1000 grit sand paper... a dab of clear coat... some wizards scratch remover and the buffer.
here is the part that's hardest to do....the prep and the aftermath of sanding off the top of the clearcoat blob looks about the same....I'll post some after pics..these are the last few I have to do....
I've got about an hour per chip......
But it's turning out really nice... you can't tell where I've fixed them...
obviously I still have to buff these spots out...

The car I had before the vette was a 07 Monte Carlo SS, red with blacks stripes that I bought new. I hated the stipes because they were decals, so I took it to my body guy and said take them off and paint them with Metallic Black. It looked amazing. Two weeks later I'm in the left lane coming up on a semi in the right, cars coming onto the x-way and the semi jerks into the left lane, so bad that he can't stop from going all the way on the shoulder, spraying me with sand, rocks, and there's a car right behind me so I'm suck. Needless to say there went my 1200 dollar paint job !!!!!!!
In this city where I live there are sooo many tandem gravel trucks that I think they out number cars and they have gravel truck races daily on public roads. Its hell for a good paint job!!!
Looks like you have a good start on the repairs. Hate when that happens. Don't get enough rain down here to wash the rocks off the roads so it doesn't matter if it's a truck or car. Gonna get em....I have a few I'm working on myself.
VERY interested in the final result
I have a couple chips that I chalked up as a loss, but if this works I'll give it a shot.
Good luck and keep us posted !!
Rock chips are the bane of people with nice cars. I've gotten more rock chips driving at the speed limit at the recommended distance from the car in front of me than when I'm speeding and pushing on the guy in front of me. Since I retired I've changed my driving habits and now I don't get in a hurry and don't push and do get a butt load of rock chips on all my cars and trucks. Meanwhile, my Vette has scars all over it. Some jerk tried to break into the car and only managed to scratched up the area around the drivers door lock. Another jerk put a big key scar down the right side of the car when I parked it at the grocery store on my way home one day. The whole gamut of scars, scrapes and general paint damage tends to make me nuts.
The freeway entrance on my daily route is the same one a local concrete company uses, so I encounter their trucks a lot. They have broken 3 windshields in the 20 years I've lived here, and have always been good about paying for the damage. Each truck has a identifying number, and if you make a note of the time, it's no questions asked. Some companies are good neighbors, and some try to avoid responsibility. Did you try to talk to the trucking company?
This is a sensitive issue for a lot of people, not just our Corvettes, but any of our vehicles. I have also been a recipient of these dreaded trucks that chipped both windshield and paint. On a couple of occasions I was able to get the companies phone number and the trucks plates when the issue happened and called the companies immediately and described what had happened with the time and place. To my surprise they had their insurance cover it. On another occasion a company basically told me to pound sand (no pun intended), and said that I had to have video evidence of this occurring, WTH !! I now will just lag 'way' behind to avoid this issue, but if this happens to you it is worth trying to get the plates, name of company, and document (phone video) if possible.

I think these would all be contracted trucks just hauling rock to a work sight .. and because I had NO idea any damage was done....I had no reason to turn around and get tags or company info..I have done that in the past and like you had a super nice response from those companies that paid for new windshields..
Thank you

I hear ya..it's funny I took this road because it's normally a nice quiet back road I drive about 45 and love the extra time getting home enjoying the country.....just didn't realize they had a project going on and was in the wrong place at the wrong time.....

Had a similar incident a few years ago in my C5. Took out the hood, windshield and my Lexan roof when they hit a bump ($4700 in damage). Luckily the rocks hit the ground before bouncing up and hitting my car, so it was covered under Comprehensive. I was told by my insurance company that if the rocks had not touched the ground first, it would have been considered a Collision!
3M bra saved my front bumper.
I made the mistake of getting the license plate of the truck which only delayed the repair. My insurance company contacted the driver, and he said it was very possible, but his insurance company said "prove it" or we are not paying. No way to "prove it", so eventually my insurance company paid.

This method is working VERY well.... most are completely gone a couple you have to try hard to find them and couple that I need to sand and buff some more...it's slow and tedious..I don't want to go through the clear!!
The steps are simple...
Sand an area over the chip with 1000 grit
wipe it off with solvent
put a glob of clear on the chip with a toothpick or tiny brush...
let dry...sand off till level
buff with orbital buffer and a fine cut
polish...
re-sand, buff, polish, re-sand, buff, polish...etc you get the picture.

73Corvette, please post how you made the repair and the final result. Also, has anyone tried the Eckler's repair kit (Dr. Colorchip)? Costs about $50 but claims are you can't tell when the repair is complete. I'm about ready to buy it, but would like to know if anyone else tried it.

Should have pulled them over called a Highway patrol and cited them. I have seen it done.

You are exactly right BigDog. I went through an episode like this myself. In Iowa, if the vehicle ahead picks up a stone or debris already on the road and chucks it your way and hits you, it is no ones fault and you pay to fix your own vehicle. If the vehicle ahead of you drops debris on the roadway, then it is a different matter. In Iowa, once it is on the truck, the truck driver is resposible to keep it on the truck. I had an instance where a flatbead semi trailer in front of me ran over a bump, and i saw dozens of rocks bounce off his trailer and land on the roadway. Rocks were bouncing all over the place and i was hit multiple times. I pulled up alongside the truck and wrote down company name and vehicle number. The truckers insurance company told me to pound sand, and i told them we would pound it togehter in small claims court, where i won the case and they paid the full claim and court costs.
Here is the thread. https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...ght=flyboyslc1
If this happens to you, you need to report it to the police and file an accidet report. it will be very valuable to you if you end up in court.
