Certainly that location on every C5 I've ever looked at...don't recall a '97.

C5 body control module
I have a 2000 corvette coupe automatic. I'm looking at a used body control module on eBay that has same part number as mine . Does that make it a perfect fit ? It also came from identical model as mine .

I ordered a BCM off ebay for my 97 a few months ago, made sure to get the same serial #. Then, as mentioned earlier, had someone with a tech II program in the right options, which are found inside one of the rear hatch lids. Mine worked out perfect.

You need to do this PCM to BCM relearn with a replacement BCM.
Do this before you worry about VATS issues:
1. Turn the key to ON for 11 minutes.
2 Turn the key to OFF for 30 seconds.
3. Repeat 1&2 two more times.
4. Turn the key to ON for 30 seconds.
The car should start and run with the new BCM.
This will sync the PCM to the New BCM
Once the BCM and PCM are sync'ed up you can start and drive the car. However, RPO's that the car has installed MUST be programmed into the BCM using a TECH II. RPO's on the car must be turned on in the BCM. For example if your car had options like the F45 or F55 suspension, the BCM must be told its there. Similarly with whether the car is a manual vs automatic, etc. You can get the RPO list and if you have someone that has a TECH II you can do that yourself. Not all the RPO's listed get programmed into the BCM.
Until 1998 this RPO sticker was fixed to the cover of the left rear storage compartment. Later models have their sticker on the cover of the glove box.
If you live near me I can do your any RPO code changes for a cold beer.
