Default Soundproofing a C5....options?

I am considering installing sound dampening material throughout the interior of my C5.

Anyone have advice on what works best? Foil or the Premium insulation?

Was there any great change after everything was installed?

I look forward to your input! THX

I've done LOTS of sound deadening and stereo installs on my own vehicles over the last 40 years... this is the BEST idea for a C5 you can possibly do... along with some door and interior work... but, if I was just going to do one project this would be the one...
I have had great success with Dynamat.... there are several alternatives that also produce equal or better results some more expensive some less...

I used 2 layers in the areas behind the seats, trunk & wheel wells) 1st. layer was Fatmat extreme rattletrap(a thicker butyl mat) to dampen the metal and on top of that closed cell foam with aluminum foil backing as the 2nd layer which I got from vettenuts as a precut kit. Only used the same foam kit in the passenger compartment since the major source of road noise was from the trunk & wheel wells. It only helped a little in cutting down the noise and folks in the know recommended changing to a quieter tire such as Michelin PS or Hankook Ventus. I'm hoping it will cut down on the heat. Besides tire noise, you will still hear the engine & exhaust...but that's just the vette's personality...otherwise...trade it in for a Cadallac.

btw, DO NOT USE the roof repair stuff with the aluminum foil backing you get from the hardware stores....they look the same as Fatmat or Dynamat but they have Asphalt which is a carcinogen...it's ok to use on a house roof b/c it's outside but not ok to use indoors...ie to soundproof the inside of your car.

For example, Peel N Seal is for roof repair and has asphalt.

I used Raamat in both of my C5s with good results.

I did my entire interior (convertible) with one of those foam/foil kits that the vendors here sell. It made some difference, but is not the best material to use for sound deadening.
I then covered my wheel well liners in back, the small removable front liners and also on the door skins. I used a product by Second Skin, which is comparable to the Dynamat products, and that made a bigger difference than all the foam/foil put together.
If I were to do it all over, I'd use the Second Skin stuff, or comparable, exclusively. It's considerably more expensive than the foam/foil, but then if you're going to take the time to do this, you might as well do it the right way.

You will find a lot of different opinions and suggestions about what to use and how effective it will be. Suggest you first do a little research about the science behind the sound blocking/vibration dampening/sound absorption as they are related in making the interior quiet or at least as quiet as you can make it. Don't forget the other ways to reduce noise by going after the cause, ie run-flat tires, leaking exhaust, bad suspension components, etc. Look here for some information about techniques and sources of sound, not necessarily their products:

Then research the products on the market and make an informed decision. I used products from Second Skin but installed it using the advice from the site I gave the link to. You can definitely over do the install and spend more than you will get in return so educate yourself first.

Good luck.

Dynamat is the way to go- but like most things, the best is usually the most $$$$$. I did mine on the cheap with insulation from Lowes for around 30 bucks. I know it is not dynamat but it made a noticeable and worthwhile improvement.
