I am a new owner of a beautiful 2002 base corvette.I want to replace the automatic transmission due to wear issues with current one.My question is" how to determine a replacement compatible model to obtain"?
I would think the A4 transmission in the car is specific to the C5. Not sure if one from a C6 would work.
If you are looking for a remanufactured trans ready to bolt in, find a reputable auto repair shop that offers remanufactured transmissions from Jasper. Jasper transmissions come with a 3 year, 100K mile warranty.
Automatic trans from a C6 will NOT just bolt into a C5. It has been discussed many times over the years here on Corvette Forum. Without extensive modifications you are pretty much limited to the transmission that came in the C5's.
Not to mention, it is not easy like changing transmissions in old cars. You need special skills, tools and equipment. It is a DIY job only for people that know what they are doing.

I was contemplating doing the remove and replace myself driven from the mechanical background over the years. Special tools and equipment for this car is not in my inventory. That being said plus the thought of having a reputable business with warranty seems to be the route to take. Thank you for your advise.

I have changed transmissions in older cars and it is no big deal, but I would never attempt it on a C5. There are a few guys here that could do it, but I am not one of them.
