Default Catch Can Question - Petcock Draining

Perhaps a "duh" question, but how is the petcock at the bottom of the catch can supposed to work? I have a chrome catch can from CCA similar to the one pictured below. According to the instructions, if you turn the petcock clockwise or up towards the bottom of the can, this allows the oil to drain out. To seal the can back up, you're supposed to turn the petcock counter-clockwise or to the bottom of the can.

I removed my can to perform some other work on the engine and noticed that the petcock just turns and doesn't move up or down. After opening the can from the top, I noticed some oil was still in the can so I tested the petcock while looking into the can and nothing happened when I turned the petcock. It was just spinning. It seemed to work correctly the first time I drained the can as I had a good amount of oil that was drained.

Could it be broke? If so, can I pick up a replacement at a local hardware store or is this an automotive-specific piece of hardware?

Thanks!

If it were mine I'd probably go to a hardware store and try to replace it with a different style of pet ****... I use these in the oil field for various applications.... the work better IMHO

Thanks. Is it a simple swap where I unscrew the existing petcock and replace it with a better one or do I need any special sealer or trim?

If you can find the correct replacement I would use some thread tape to insure a good seal...
Just take the one you take out of your catch can with you to the hardware store so you make sure you get the correct thread...

Plumbing supply place should have some also...

I also run the Elite Engineering catch can so mine does not have the petcock, but yes, you can just replace that one with another one like it or a little different style and you should be good to go.

Thanks for all the help. Believe it or not, I don't believe I ever used a "petcock" before installing this catch can. I never even knew what a "petcock" was and now that I have a new "petcock" installed, I understand how a "petcock" is supposed to work. I was able to purchase my new "petcock" at the local hardware store for $3 but it's a standard ring-type "petcock" and not the nicer, turn valve "petcock" as recommended above. Who knows, maybe I will purchase an improved "petcock" in the future.

For now, I can't stop using the word "petcock".

Thanks!
