Well, in my years of experience as a tire installer/driver, I would still go with 265/40-17 fronts, if you want a balanced handling car. I'm guessing Chevrolet thought so too.
Chevrolet also thought that putting a poor excuse for a performance tire (GY F1 Supercar) on their flagship sports car was a good idea. They were mistaken.

I agree, but it did not have anything to do with the correct size. For whatever it's worth, I'm running 275/60-15 tires with 15x10 wheels on my street legal Camaro dirt track car, and they work okay, but good luck trying to find good tires in that size anymore.
So after hearing your opinions, and doing a little more research, I'm definitely going with the Continental ExtremeContact DW's. Same treadwear as the Bridgestones RE760's, but the Conti's are Y rated tires, whereas the Bridgestones are W rated. Not that I ever intend to take the car past 168mph, but both are comparably priced, so may as well go with the better tire overall. Thanks everyone for your help.
I had the Continental ExtremeContact DWs on my car for about 2 weeks. I hated them. Sidewalls extremely soft. They were 275/40x17 and 295/35x18 on Stock Z06 size wheels. Back end would wiggle, sway, wobble and just have an overall feeling of not being planted, whether going through a curve, or just making a corner. The rearend was just not comfortable. I went back to the Bridgestone RE760s. I would suggest you buy them from Discount Tire. They have a ride guarantee so you can exchange them if need be. You won't be stuck. As they were changed we compared the stiffness of the Contis vs Bridgestones. The Contis could be pressed into an oval shape whereas the Bridgestones could not.
I put Hankooks on my 2004 'vert last year. They are way, way better than the OEM runflats that were on them before. Quiet, great traction. I've put about 8,000 miles on them and they look new.

The back of mine feels super planted, it's only the front end that you can feel the sidewall flex.
I don't track my 01 Z car and I unashamedly confess to being a "waxer." Even so, I just changed from the original Goodyear tires on the car to Bridgestones after I discovered the Goodyears were 15 years old. The originals looked perfect as mine was a low mileage museum car, but I decided 15 years was way too long. Drove the car to the Lone Star Corvette Classic this weekend and found that the Bridgestones made an amazing difference in terms of ride and tire noise. As others on the forum have written, there may be better track tires, but the Bridgestones have been excellent for my kind of driving and the price is certainly right in comparison to most other brands. By the way, the car scored a First in Class.

Very nice sir. Nothing wrong with being a "waxer". It's a way of life.
Jesus dude. I just ran and checked my receipts and have a little over 10k on them. I drive hard but they only get spun occasionally when pulling out or in the wet. TONS of life still on these bad boys.

It could be the cars itself. Way the cars track or alignment are different. My vett tires lasted until I changed alignment.
Can anyone find the Vredesteins? I just spoke with a vendor the other day that said they are discontinuing the line and only have the common sizes? Has anyone bought these recently?
for cheapos 760's or dw's fit the car and work. Nothing wrong with 255-275 front and 285-305 rear.
The best c5z stock wheel, street tire setups that give you ample traction to use most of the car most of the time, are a 255/295 rival setup biased toward higher temps or heavy track, or mpss 245/285 setup(this is over all the best probably, between longevity and total grip in varing temps)
Very track biased but streetable is a 275/305 r888.
There are other options but these are the most popular cause they make the most sense relative to their cost and what they can do.
the tire shop told me the Continental DWS have a problem with the sidewalls bulging....they've discontinued them and have a new tire comming out soon. Sounds like the DW tires have the same sidewall problem. I just replaced my original 14 yr old GY run flats with Michelin Pilot Sport AS/3 non run flats and the car is soooooo much quieter and smoother over bumps. The car used to hop going over those metal expansion joints in the road....even scarier around a curve with expansion joints!
