I just bought a 1999 c5 she's a beauty but the air bag light is on and I can't get an inspection. I'm in Virginia so there strict as hell! Any advice on what to do?
Pull your onboard dash DIC codes so we can see what they say. If you don't know how let us know.
Is the light in the IPC or in the console? I know in my 2001 the console light just means the passenger side has been deactivated by the switch in the glove box. Not at home to see if the 99 has that feature. Take a look and see.
I have also seen a lot of cases where the clockspring in the steering column is bad and will cause the light to go on. The clockspring allows the steering wheel to rotate and still allow the airbag circuit to work.

I have a 2002 and the light can be disconnected by going underneath the center console do a temp disconnect get the inspection and the reinstall, just to pass inspection. also check the codes as previously stated there are lots of threads on C5 DTC CODES.
I will check in the glove box. Under the dash drivers side how do I know which cable to disconnect so that I can temp pass my inspection? I tried to clear the code by the over ride and I managed to clear all of them but when I cleared the 58-Sdm it cleared the air bag light than about 5 seconds later the light came back on. Tried several times. I think unplugging the cable for the light would be the best option. Thoughts?

DO NOT DRIVE THE CAR!!! My airbag light was on a couple of years ago, and the dealer had to order the airbag computer. He would not even start the car! The airbag could go off at any time! It will cost you around 700$. A gm dealer or someone with a tech II tool has to replace it.

Unless the car has had a passenger side air bag cutoff switch installed after the car was built, the '99s did not come with that feature from the factory. The cutoff switch became available on the mid-00 model year cars.

Is there some reason you don't want to share what code(s) was there?
You can't simply disable the IPC light, only one if it is in the console. To disable the IPC light you would have to pull the IPC and remove the bulb.
With regard to the airbag going off because the system is not working, I will not even comment on that one.
Was the light on when you bought the car? Any possibility it was in a wreck and the SIR system was never repaired?
The code is 58-sdm. The light was on when I bought it but I was told it came on when the radio was put in. I think he might have forgotten to plug in the air bag on the passenger side when he did that he said. Apparently I will have to remove the entire dash to get to the plug.
Anyone in or near Norfolk/Hampton that knows a good mechanic that could help me out with this? I'm navy so I'm always in Norfolk but I live in Hampton.
oh, and Tire City (same intersection as Casey Chev) is one of the few places around that will repair runflats.
Although I think Casey now has the equipment and personnel to repair as well.

That is not a code. That is the module name. Codes will show up under the module if they are there. Please try again.
