Default LS1 Rebuild

I have a 98 Pacecar with a bad knock. I was wondering about how much a rebuild cost and what reasonably priced better performance parts would you recommend . What other LS engines would matchup without any major work. I have an auto transmission.

It may help if you have a budget and a goal in mind... just too many dynamics involved to throw out numbers...

A crate engine is around $6k to $8k

Default price of rebuild

I just finished a rebuild on my 2001 ls1. I did not have any knocks. I replaced all pistons going .010 over with hone to straighten up bores. Had crank polished, block cleaned and checked for line bore and decked. Heads were surfaced as well as a valve job, new valve springs and seals. New camshaft and ls7 lifters. All new std bearings, rods checked and all new rod bolts, timing set and new Melling oil pump. All parts and machine shop work was about 2200.00 dollars. I did my own labor. I believe that a crate engine would be a better deal due to the warranty you receive. There are several topics about putting the newer LS engines in the c5. Dollars add up quick when tearing into a knocking engine. Good luck with your repair.

I have zero engine rebuilding experience, but I think at the end of the day you might be better off just buying an entirely new crate engine.

Far too many variables and issues to worry about doing a full rebuild, if even one thing is less then perfect it can be disastrous.

Yopu could end up with another knocking engine in 6 months, a year ,, 2 years .. who knows.
