Coming from my torque-less wonder honda, I expected this car with 400 lbs/ft to really plant you into the seat, but I find that it does not really even "come alive" until 4k or so.
Is it just me? I remember riding in my dads vettes as a boy (86,87,88.89) and not even being able to move...
I think your butt-o-meter is out of calibration if you are trying to compare the S2000 to a Z06 and comment that the Z06 feels weak down low :bs
Maybe something is wrong with your car, so your idea of a dyno trip might be in order.
As far as memories of what your dad's vette would do, time has a habit of distorting reality. Unless dad had a super modified car you are driving the fastest 0-60 vette ever made. ;)
I drove an S-2000 last week; nice car but a real dog compared to any C5. Some folks become de-sensitized driving a fast car, you anticipate the acceleration forces and thus feel them less. I'm running 433/396 at the wheels and the car often feels "slow" to me. Taking a ride in the passenger seat will change your perspective.
Arg,
As a boy, you weighed considerably less....the G forces affected you a LOT differently than as an adult.....
The Z really does come alive from 3500/UP.........
If you want to feel G forces, rev it up to 5 grand in comp mode and dump the clutch...........
The reason the Z "Feels slow", is the technology involved.......
You can make a mistake and you don't die.........like you might have in Dad's vettes......
The tires are a B_I_T wider, compound is perfect for street/strip.......and the cars just hook.
If you still feel this way, try doing the above, and POWERSHIFTING with the AH/TC OFF.............
Make sure you have a place to lose control..........and not hit something.......
( This is a tounge in cheek reccommendation of course.....I would NOT do this).
You might be looking at your butt, as your head is in rectal defilade........ ;)
If you still feel this way..........add a set of 3.90 gears...............and put some F series redline tires on it................you will then appreciate what you have............. :D :D :D
You become accustomed to speed and acceleration, so it's not really possible to compare cars that way. The LS6 is a powerful engine, but it's still a small block and the feeling you speak of is characteristic of small blocks.
Well my friend, here is what I recommend. Test drive a Honda Civic and then drive your ZO6 right afterwards. You will restore that whoop azz feeling that you are looking for by doing this. If you expect too much you could kinda deminish the effect when you drive one. Has the weather been really humid and hot in NJ? If so this could also have a big effect on your preception of your cars performance. Why exactly does it feel slow? Does it bog under normal drive conditions? Does it stutter if you nail the throttle? If you think it is having an actual mechanical problem then by all means, take it and have it checked out.
Best of luck!
Justin
Or just wait till you need to get something fixed on the Z06 at the dealer and they hand you the keys to that powerhouse KIA loaner. When you first get it back, if you don't think the Z06 is the best f'ing car ever then it might be time to have yourself checked out. :D
The heat and humidity are really a killer. A couple of 95 degree days had me feeling like there was something wrong with my car.. until I went for a drive at 2am when the temp had dropped about 20 degrees. Faith restored... :)
I have to agree, the heat really affects performance. I also agree that the car doesn't come alive until it's midway in the rpm range. My other car a Pontiac GrandPrix GTP has loads of torque down low so sometimes that feels like it kicks in faster...but the Z's fat tires in the back sure does hook up when you stomp on the gas. :)
the tall overall gearing in american cars that swallow large differences in speed for each gear will give you a misleadingly slow impression. my dad's bonneville s/c (14.525 at 94.1 mph) feels pedestrian compared to my other friends lightly modded short-overall geared '97 Eclipse GSX AWD turbo. But in repeated drag races and highway roll-on races, my dad's car destroyed it.
When you look at the speedo and see how mild it feels, think of your Z06 as building speed "effortlessly."
Maybe it is the theory of relativity. The Z06 is one of the faster cars on the road, but you get used to the speed and acceleration. That is what allows indy racers to eventually feel comfortable at speeds in excess of 230 mph.
Argetni, I think that is pretty normal. When you hear "400hp" most people tend to think it'll be crazy..insane..uncontrolable, pin you in the seat acceleration, etc, but its really not. 350rwhp does feel slow to me too, its not all that exciting. The only advice I can give is, you gotta mod it until you like it. Once I hit 420rwhp in my camaro I was finally ok with it...it felt slow still sometimes, but for the most part I was happy...felt like it should have from the factory.
Now I have my 363rwhp C5 and it again feels like a dog. Mods are on the way and I'm fully confident it'll finally feel like a sports car should soon.
You need to learn to drive the thing. I beleive all 405 HP comes in at 5500 on the RPM. Believe me, it will eat the S2000 for breakfast.
It's the torque that makes it pull..... 400@ 4800rpm, this beast PULLS
I believe the S2000 has 156 @7000 or something.
Now the S2000R is a different story.....
Actually, it's the horsepower to weight ratio at any given rpm...If you don't believe me, try driving a Formula 1 car or a superbike. More torque down low just means it is easier to get/stay in the power band quickly and the car will feel faster than a similarly driven car that has a higher reving engine. In other words, 400 lbs-feet at 2625 will feel the same with the same gearing and weight as 200 lbs-feet at 5250 (200 hp in this case). Drivers just have to learn to drive the cars in their respective power bands... With the Z06, you'r putting out about 200 hp at 3000 rpm and 300 hp at the crank at 4000 rpm. So the car only has 300+ hp above 4000 rpm. You have to keep it in the 4000-6500 range for maximum performance.
Of course an LPE Supercharge would put an end to this dicussion.
