Default temperature dash bulb went out

Hi you knowledgeable folks! Has anyone changed the bulb behind the temperature glass on the C5? Mine was getting dim and I went to get a bulb and it finally went out. I am asking how to get that part of the dash apart. I think I need to open the arm rest and remove the TC switch which allows me 2 screws to remove that piece but I am not sure. I did a search and no luck.

Thanks

Mike

Are you referring to the TEMP Display on the A/C Control unit? If so, and it is getting dim, it is most likely the cold-soldered joints needing re-soldering - there is no "bulb" to replace. I had to re-solder mine a few years ago and it is still working.

There are instructions here on the forum explaining the procedure.

That is exactly what I am talking about. The dealer sold me a bulb but I can jus as easy resolder the part.

Here is a link that tells you how to access it and fix it. There are 2 versions of the circuit board for their location but each uses 8 of these surface mounted resistors. Use as little heat input as you can or they will "move" around. Best to have someone help hold them in place with something.

If you have a manual shifter you do not have to remove the shift ****. If you lift the console surround up and separate the boot from it, it will rotate/tilt and you can lift the console up and off. This will leave the boot and shifter in place.

Mr. Sam

PS: The buttons do use bulbs so if you have any out you can use Radio Shack 272-1092 bulbs to replace.

Mine almost totally went out. If you tap hard on the display with your finger and it gets bright for a moment, then more than likely its the loose resistor problem. I've been tapping on mine for couple of years before finally doing the solder fix about a month ago. There is a sticky on the method.

It actually only takes about 15 min to get the circuit board out and on a bench. Use a low wattage solder wand (got mine at Lowes) not a big gun.

Definitely have a second person hold down each resistor with a pencil or tooth pick as you solder. Those little suckers (about 1/2 the size as the end of a pencil) will move around in a heart beat !!

First time I did not use flux paste and the solder did not flow well enough to make a good connection. So I had to redo it about a week later. put a little flux paste on a tooth pick and apply to each end of each resistor. Solder flows much better, then clean up the excess with a little alcohol and Q-tip. Mine has been bright as new for last month.
