Default MN6 fluid

I'm currently using Amsoil ATF in the MN6 box of my 02 Coupe. There's always been a kind of 'chuffing' noise through the gear lever in the 8 years I've owned the car but became more noticeable when I installed an MGW shifter. Shifting has always been fine, no missing gears or grinding just this damn noise which I'd like to get rid of or at least make it less irritating, it's not getting worse just always there.
Prior to the Amsoil I put Royal Purple in, neither fluid made any difference.
Anyone else had this problem and if so can another fluid be suggested?
Thanks in advance.

I saw such a huge difference with Red Line Shockproof in my HD I wonder if anyone has any experience with that on the C5 6 Speed. I wouldn't say the tranny needs help like the 5 speed HD did, but it it would make sense that it would smooth things up.

redline d4 atf works wonderful in our cars. at least the later models without paper block rings

additive pack in redline is excellent

As "general maintenance", I replaced the fluids in my '01 coupe, initially, when the car was a couple of years old, then 5-6 years later (the car celebrated it's 14th birthday this week). I put the appropriate Red Line oils in the tranny and diff, both times, and everything has been OK. I must admit, however, that it's a low mileage car....

A while back I changed to good 'ole Dex III from Valvoline. Shifts perfectly, no issues at all. This on a '98 which I have had from new, with a short shift set up.

dex 3 is a very very broad term. additive packs and base stocks vary a lot

i do agree that if it has never been changed pretty much any new atf would work wonders

i'm a huge fan of ester base stocks in the c5. they provide a slight swelling effect on seals vs the shrinking of PAO or hardening of dino base.

Sounds as though nobody else has heard the same noise that I'm hearing so unless I'm told otherwise I'm going to change to Redline. Hopefully that may improve things.

I am sure that I don't know the full story, but I have been reading about X-Pipes lately. Do you have one? There is some rattle that occurs during decell. If I know what that sound is, I think I heard it between easy upshifts and sounds like a transmission sound.

Can anyone that knows chime in here?

Likely the dreaded coins in a can H-pipe dingle. Do a search using H-pipe and rattle as key words. I'm guessing this is your H-pipe, hated that sound. That or potentially a tranny hanger bracket (the one just ahead of the axle with springs is often a noise maker).
Replaced my H-pipe with an X-pipe when I put my headers in, no more dingle. Rear hangers were replaced with standard rubber isolated hangers also.

The car has had this noise since I bought it over 8 years ago, it wasn't a problem at first as although the noise was there, it was faint. Within the first year I changed the exhaust and installed an x pipe making no difference to the noise. It was only when I installed the MGW shifter that the noise became louder, the precision engineering of the device allowing the sound to transmit into the cabin more. I may try some deadening material inside the shifter boot and then change the transmission fluid over the winter.
Was just interested to know if anyone else had this noise.

I am thinking it is probably time for some new fluid in my 2000 MN6. How hard is it to change the fluid and are there any special tools required?

You'll just need a way to get the new fluid into the transmission. Some prefer a pump. I use a suction gun which I picked up at AutoZone...

examples of what? ask a question

if you mean popular brands and their base stocks

redline is ester
mobile 1 race is pao/ester hybrid

both these oils are very very good

amsoil is PAO
royal purple is PAO

amsoil is the better of these two if you get their higher end oils. something they have done helps prevent the shrinking of PAO, it just seems to leak less than RP. it's really uncanny how many RP cars wind up leaking

mobile 1 is a highly refined group 3 dino but has a great additive pack in their high mileage variant, also cheap. gear oils are also likely a group 3+

when you talk trans and rear end oils there may be more hybrids and mixtures with the above brands. i haven't seen that many atf/ 80/90w analysis tests

OK, so maybe I could have been a bit more clear. Thanks.
Assuming you run redline D4 in your tranny? And in your rear (not a question I ask often... LOL)?

RedLine D4 ATF in the 6 speed tranny, and RedLine 75W90 gear oil in the differential.
