Default More gear

I am thinking about installing 373 gears in my 04Z, hoping for a noticeable change in bottom performance. Anybody that has done this please chime in. Thanks for your input.

I have not, but will offer my inexperienced opinion. Going from 3.42 to 3.73 is maybe too small a change to make a substantial seat of the pants (or ETA) change.
I'd think 3.90 minimum, or maybe 4.11's would be better.

Depends what you use your car for, in general short gears aka low gears like 390 or 411 will cause better acceleration and you will really notice the difference. But just like everything else in your car engine power has to match the rear end. Keep in mind though that with lower gears you loose top end speed. A torquey engine like the LS engines you dont need to go crazy with the gears, if you want to improve your acceleration 390 should be a happy place. As usuall bigger (or in this case lower gears) doesnt always mean better. Hope this helps

For the drag strip it will work, BECAUSE you will use slicks or race tires.
However, you will have NO traction on the street with those lower gears.
If your car is a track or strip car only, or if you roll race from (say) 3rd gear........you will be fine. But you will find 1st and 2nd gear mostly useless on the street with street tires (and we haven't even mentioned slick conditions like snow or rain).

You better have some good tires, or you might actually end up going slower with 3.90s or 4.10s.

i just got my vette a few weeks ago. it already had 3.90 gears [02 z06]. Cant give you a comparsion but the 3.90 feels great. I think 5th and 6th are overdrives so it cruses very comfortable at 60-70 mph.

Thanks for the input guys. I thought about a cam, but I am concerned about losing bottom end punch and drive ability issues. I have already installed long tubes and tune. I am not sure a cam would give me a noticeable change in performance as per dollar outlay.

If the rear is stock pretty sure they're all 3.42
Yes, both 5th and 6th are OD. Top Speed is attained in 5th, 6th is for gas mileage.

Do you have a reputable performance shop in your area? You could probably stop in and talk to them about it.

Are you planning on drag racing at the local track, is that why you're thinking about changing your gears?

Yes, orig owner had 3.90 gears with hardened shafts installed and said car was much more fun in around town driving.
