My understanding is that the true 2003 50th Anniversary Edition is the darker red with shale interior. I keep seeing people advertising their red, gray, yellow, etc., 03s as anniversary edition cars and asking prices that reflect them being a limited edition -- if not going so far as to describe them as such.
Am I on the right track or am I missing something?

You are correct, so try to dazzel them with the facts. Stay
I bought my 03 AE back in May and it amazed me at the ads, mostly dealers, saying RARE. According to www.corvsport.com, there were 4,085 coupes and 7,547 convertibles that were Anniversary Red for a total of 11,632 total out of 35,469 total Vettes built in 03. That works out to 32.8% of 03 Vettes are that color. I absolutely love the color and that is one of the big reasons I sold my C4 and bought one, but, RARE. Wonder if there was another color in any other year, other than 53, that had that high of percentage of total production?

All 2003 C5s had 50th anniversary front and rear emblems as well as a 50th emblem on the instrument cluster, and perhaps that is where many people confuse a blue, silver, white, etc. 2003 as anniversary edition cars. You are correct that the only 2003 that was officially a 50th Anniversary Edition car was the ones that were anniversary red in color with a shale interior. It would also have the 1SC RPO code and came in coupe and convertible only. There were no AE Z06s made.
All 2003's carried anniversary badges front and rear, but only the red with the shale interior is the anniversary special edition.
Unfortunately most have that rare special edition mindset, so they think it's worth more. And they'll wait for someone that doesn't know any better to pay their price and think they got a rare anniversary edition.
I would just look for an 02 or an even an 04 if the budget allows.

They do the same thing with the 78 anniversary, 96 Collector and all the others . . . they look at the emblem and that's what they put in the ad . . .you'd think they'd learn before posting.....

Mine is a 2003 Silver and has the logos and badges but it does not have a 50 logo on the cluster. Any Ideas? Maybe mine got what was left over on the parts shelf.
Those outside badges are not standard. Someone has changed them. They look like they might be fender badges from an 2003 AE but might be a bit too big for that.

Hard to say. Either that or the cluster was changed at some point. It should have the logo on the cluster.
True AE's do look nice. Great color combination. As far as being rare, they were actually the most produced of all the 2003's.
According to the Corvette Black Book, there were 11,632 Anniversary Reds produced in 2003 (4,085 coupe and 7,547 Conv). Compare that to Electron Blue where there were a total of 2,770 produced (967 Coupe and
531 Conv and 1,272 Z06). So, the Electron Blue 2003 is much "rarer" than the actual AE. The "rarest" 2003 in terms of production is Speedway White at 679 total. (371 Coupe and 308 Conv)

When I was looking for a Corvette I almost bought a true anniversary edition coupe, but then saw the 2003 EB coupe I eventually bought. I did not know the low numbers of 2003 EB coupes till I started doing some research on production numbers. Then it turns out that mine has the light oak interior which was the rarest interior for the 2003's as well.
Hard to say. Either that or the cluster was changed at some point. It should have the logo on the cluster.
You know; come to think about it; when I bought mine I got a sheet from the dealer that showed all the repairs done to it. Seems like in 2005, the cluster was changed under warranty. It does seem that the dealer would have changed out apples for apples.

They may have had another cluster lying around and then billed GM for a brand new OEM part.
