Default Shifter Boot Install

I am not the first owner of my Vette but definitely the last Anyway the previous owner replaced the shifter boot with an after-market boot and I now realize it is missing the metal retainer ring, which is why it's been pulling up from the bottom.

Question on the ring install, I see a few differing instructions on the web where one has the bottom of the boot wrapped around the ring, and another does not use the ring at all. In each though the boot is glued or otherwise fastened to the

What is the correct way to do this. Does it need to be wrapped around the metal ring and clipped to the cup, or should it be glued directly to the cup?

Added a picture of what Vette Essentials shows.

Thanks,
Vinny

I've changed out my shift boot several times and also change the original plastic retainer ring to a metal wire retainer. Both systems use the same method of attachment to the shift boot. The shift boot should have corresponding holes that line up with either the plastic ring clips or the metal wire hooks. That's all there is. It's a compression fit.

The plastic ring in the picture is what the car comes with. My understanding is the plastic ones are no longer made, hence the metal ones. They are not used together.

True story.

P.S. the plastic retainer ring was never available as a separate item. It only comes on the shift boot assembly and it is crap.

Use the aftermarket metal retainer.

Heck of a lot better than the plastic piece that tends to break over time.

Do you mean the shift boot, or the retaining ring?
