Transmission Problems
So I'm pretty sure 3 and 4 went out on me today. 
I was crusing about 80 when the car started losing power and the RPM revving really high. It will shift between 1st and 2nd but shutters and won't stay in 3rd. There are no messages on the DIC or check engine lights. I called a local transmission shop and was told it was common for a tranny to go out on these cars with my milage.?? Price quoted was around $1800.
2001 Vert A4 w/129K Suggestions or anything to check out before having it rebuilt?

You could pull your dash DIC codes just in case to see if they show anything. Sounds like you do have internal issues.
One thing to consider is an inspection of the torque tube internals. If it were me at that mileage I would be replacing the couplers and bearings while you are in there. The driveshaft bearing at the engine also.
Make sure if they pull it they don't damage the vacuum connections at the back of the intake manifold.
MAKE SURE they have C5 experience and can provide references.
