Engine back fires during start
The 98 LS1 engine is back firing during start. It will do it once or twice then it will start and run normal. If I shut it down it will back fire again and the same thing happens. It doesn't matter if it's cold or hot and the Engine is not running lean or rich. However, until today I had not gotten any codes. Now I get code 0342 which is something to do with the cam sensor voltage. Before I replace the cam position sensor, is there anything else I could check? Can the sensor be removed with the intake on? I'm also hearing the starter hang a little after start but I figure I just need to shim the starter for that issue.

Get his resolved since a backfire at start can lead to breaking the block where the starter is bolted. The use of the newer 2 long bolts starter design can reduce the chance of block damage.
If you break the block it can be welded or there is a kit designed to fix it but it is not cheap.

Replaced the cam position sensor and the backfiring is gone,
also the starter noise is no longer. I took the advise from this forum and loosen up the starter, removed the shim, made sure the surfaces where cleaned, then reinstalled it. If the starter issue returns, I will replaced the starter with and upgraded one
