just came home from ride in vet and smelled rear diff oil, is leaking so bad its getting thrown on to exaust, assume its the seal where axle goes into rear end since there is that much oil getting out, had seepage from diff cover but now its wet....not sure if I can do this job especially on garage floor, some of the old threads links aren't good anymore, tell me whatever you can, need help, thanks...99 a4 by the way
If it's getting on the exhaust, it's misting out somewhere (vent is the obvious suspect), not the normal axle seal seepage.
looks like it could be the vent...the "cap" moves around very easily not up and down but spins and wiggles like its just sitting there, but can get a grip on it to pull it out or to pull cap off and remove spring etc..
just got cap off rubber gasket was held over opening by huge suck of vaccume pulled it off big woosh..good or bad not sure but gonna put a hose on like suggested in thread, that spring is so flimsy I cant see how it did anything at all
had a heck of a time getting hose clamped on solid...decided to cut off a 2 inch piece was much easier to get into place and get clamped tight, now I have to go to store 2moro and buy an elbow and attach 6 inches or so if hose to that, will get a can of brake clean and clean everything up before test drive, ill check fluid level to since I was on about an hour ride in case its low, thanks for the help guys, hope it does the trick
Hope that fixed it. This was a very informative thread.
just got back from first test drive, just a few miles in case rear axle seal was still the problem and its bone dry, need to go on longer test drive and get it hot but assume if it was the axle seal it would have leaked immediately, great advice guys
