What's a Good Battery?

I'm guessing there are more than a few of us that drive C5 corvettes that on occasion shop at the dreaded Walmart... that makes us substandard...cheap...satisfied with average? Some of us can't afford to shop on Rodeo Drive (wouldn't if I could) and try to live within our means...That doesn't make us inferior. Some of us would LOVE to put a set of stainless steel KOOKS longtube headers on our car... but, we can't afford them. So, if something comes along that is the BEST quality we can afford, we don't expect to be put down or made fun of because we aren't running KOOKS.

OK IM done with this thread.. those who feel insulted by my comments on cheap products.. I apologize .. I would no more wear a fake Rolex, or buy a 2 dollar screw driver. If I can not afford the product that I feel is a quality product, Ill wait until I can afford it. No one going to dial down anything... IM offering my opinion, based on my experience... its not the law or gospel... just my position on cheap verse quality..
If IM going to a body shop... I want the guy who gets 100 dollars an hour for his work, not the guy who gets 40 dollars for his work.. the reason he gets 40 an hour is because his work does not reflect the quality of work the 100 an hour guy gets...
I had an Issue with the best Corvette body shop in the tri state area.. he was 2X times as much as the average body shop... the insurance company told me that they would pay what the average shop paid and if I wanted to take it to a specialist, I would have to pay the difference... I was hit by that insurance companies client...
After one call to the State Insurance commissioners office. the insurance company paid the specialists every day price, which was 2X times that of the average body shop. All OEM parts, no Chinese non fitting parts... and I got a life time guarantee for the work, and the quality was as if it was never hit. Nothing wrong with Walmart or quality products that are sold there... the problem with Walmart is most shoppers there go because its cheap... so the products are cheap... they are built with the bottom line as the prime reason. Lots of knock off products at Walmart.. that's why they are in business. because their cheap prices bring in lots of people who believe a 49 dollar battery at wall mart is the same as a 200 dollar ACDelco, Optima, Or Sears Platinum. heres another example.. go to Walmart buy a Frame oil filter... go to any website that rates oil filters.. " frame " is always at the bottom of the list, because they are 2.99...
MY point??? is it a smart idea to put a 3 dollar oil filter into a motor that would cost you 10K plus to replace. ? to the average guy as seen by this thread.. " an Oil Filer, a Battery, a wheel, are all the same so why pay 10 dollars for a good oil filter when you can get one for 3 dollars.

One of my favorite pass times when we're slow and finished with closing duties is to test brand new red tops and see how many are already bad. It's usually about half of them.
I have a 6 year old Walmart battery in mine that was in the car when I bought it. I check it at least once a week out of concern that it will leak, but it still looks and performs like new. I also leave my lights on anytime I'm going into a store or pumping gas or anything to save wear and tear on the headlight motors, but haven't had any starting issues.
When I replace mine I will likely go with a duralast platinum. Good affordable AGM battery.

the difference in the quality of a battery from expensive to cheap is the difference in reliability. Batteries are one of the most unregulated parts on a car.. Same with camera batteries, cheap batteries don't last and are poor performers. So many doubters....when the cheapest is the mission statement of any manufacturer, quality does not enter the equation.... As a design engineer who works directly with manufacturers to produce 1st and 2nd tier products for the 6000 parts in a corvette, i can tell you from long standing experience that the cost of quality is high.. Bui the cost of the lack of quality is even more expensive..

The cost of a " cheap " unregulated, ( built to be cheap, ) battery charger can be devastating, ask those who use o9ne and you can see why they bad mouth a red top.... People who buy a good battery, for 200 dollars ,like a red top, buy a cheap 20 dollar charger to save a buck.. And wind up with a 2 year red top...and have thrown away 200 dollars because they wanted to cheap out on a charger. Those of us who are actually intelligent especially when in comes to automotive technology and don't use " cheap " products see seven, eight and even ten years out of a red top.. Its no accident that i have never had an issue with a red top ( 3 red top battery's ) in 15 years..3 different applications.
Like i said , when something is designed and built with quality in mind and with high level quality control,, using spc ( statistical process control ) the final product is not cheap and its performance is reliable...
You keep using your cheap brakes and cheap batteries, and ill do things my way.. Ill buy the quality product, and have no issues.. You save your buck.... Im 70 years old, but when i was young and dumb, i thought the same as others here...why spend 60 dollars on a charger when you can buy a charger for 20. I did not come on one of my favorite tag lines by accident.... " i can not afford to buy anything too cheap " for those who have been there and done that, the adage is very profound... You can buy a wheel for a corvette, for 100 dollars, and you can buy a wheel for 600 dollars, and to say the 100 dollar wheel will perform as well as a 600 dollar forged wheel, you have to be insane to think for one minute that a wheel is a wheel..no matter what the cost.
Smart people learn life lessons throughout their life.. Some retain them so that when they get to be my age, they can pass on the wisdom of a lifetime... But then, as this forum sometimes shows, you just cant fix or teach stupid.
Rolex??? Some of us with new and vintage rolex watches bought their vintage rolex 15 years ago for 3 grand.....they can now get 7 grand for that same rolex,, try that with a seiko. A new sub mariner is going for 10,700 dollars... No different than buying a diamond ring...
Some people dream of owning a rolex someday... Because it represents a certain level of success in life...something to be proud of, and don't forget the actual science and craftsmanship of the movement.
The children on this forum who mock quality, are the ones that go out a buy a knock off rolex for 10 dollars ( the same movement they give away in a happy meal watch for kids )and pretend to be successful until they show it to someone like me.. Who knows the difference immediately.. And now knows the caliber of a person who tried to pass off a knock off as a genuine article...

well aren't you the luckiest son of a gun in the whole wide world... you get 15+ years out of your optima car batteries, lifetime use out of your llyod's floormats, and that luck even rolls over to your camera batteries!... to be honest no one said anything about cheap until you brought it up, it's like you wanted to rant but you needed an excuse and no one was giving you one... and if you are retired then you are no longer a design engineer who works directly with manufacturers to produce 1st and 2nd tier products for the 6000 parts in a Corvette... sorry to break it to you but that ended when you retired and I'm sure things have changed substantially in the 15 years or so since you left... no worries though, I am just a stupid ignorant child just like everyone else besides yourself, so don't bother responding to me because I won't understand

I follow the "If it's not broke, don't fix it" approach. I got 6 years out of my original GM AC Delco battery in my 2004 vert. I then installed a 7-year Professional AC Delco replacement that has been working fine for the last five years. However, living in Florida, I know that heat is harder on car batteries than cold so I'm going to change my battery before year-end. However, I just found out that AC Delco no longer offers the 7-year Professional battery and now tops the warranty at 42 months.
I like the engine bling of the Red Top, but have read mixed reviews since my C5 is mostly a weekend driver.

I appreciate that... I have learned a lot from this forum and it's members so I will try to help if I can and it just bugs the heck out of me to see someone that CAN contribute and help others out but would rather belittle everyone in a condescending manner and then b*tch, whine, and moan about how stupid we all are when he is questioned... I'm sure at one time his head was pointed in the right direction but from what I have seen during my time here it's a lost cause, seems like he gets on here just to blow steam

Any battery which allows the car to start every time you turn the key.
The length of time that this will happen usually, but not in all cases depends upon the original purchase price. Pricing is normally related to the length of warranty. You buy whatever you can afford.
I would also suggest purchasing a battery with a nationwide warranty.
Proper care of a battery (trickle charge when not used for extended periods) will significantly increase its useful life. Allowing a battery to discharge will shorten its life.

The battery that is in our C5 is working great and I don't have a clue what brand it is... IF I have to replace it I'll probably consider an Interstate... I've just always had good luck with them.
