Default 383 stroker with stock block

I want info on 383 stroker builds using the stock LS1 block only. I have reviewed threads on this subject, but they always lead to FI or buying a new block. So please stick to the topic. I have 80K miles so i would like to freshen up the internals is why i am thinking stroker instead of FI.

1. How much complete cost? home build and paying someone to build.

2. Performance increase?

3. Is it cost effective, and would you do it again (assume you have a 383)?

I currently have 375 RWHP with cam, headers, Vararam, underdrive pulley, and straight pipes. I want 500+ RWHP.

1. Would a 383 stroker get me there?
2. And could it get me there with stock heads?

Opinion are welcomed, but I am looking for real life experience.

Just my 2 cents but if your making a little over 1hp per ci with the stock block 30 extra cubes might give you maybe 40 extra hp. not sure if this factors in rwhp to engine hp correctly.

I went 382 with my build. Forged the internals, stage III heads, custom cam among other things. Still had to go FI to get over 500 hp.

This guy. All other things being equal (cam sized up to suit the cubes) 375/346 × 383 = 424HP. Pulling an extra 18% will require substantial mods I'd think. Heads, cam ...? 500 is a pretty big target NA.

There have been a FEW 383's to reach that goal, but the ones im aware of are NOT street friendly. Plus to reach that goal with a 383, your gona need some serious coin. The reason you keep running into people buying new blocks is because, if the machine shop does a crappy job, youll be pulling it ALL back apart. That assembly needs to be blue printed and balanced like a top or else your nightmares will become a reality quickly. Much easier to do in a new block. If you have a machine shop that you KNOW who can handle the job, then go for it. But you cant have the slightest doubt. Again hence the reason people buy short blocks. Much better piece of mind. FYI I have a 418ci and im just 10rwhp shy of 500 and im around 10k in the motor. My build was mild and I used my 243's and had them sent off to TEA for their stage 2 job. In hind sight, It may have been better to go LS3 head and im could have made around 505-510. Its still a guess but you get the idea. Feel free to ask me any questions. Good luck with the build.

we had to put a lot of work into the trick flow 215's ... mine should be close to 500 at the tire, tested at the track and had run 10.19 NA and 9.5X with a 100 shot of nitrous. currently in shop being street tuned and then they may go on the dyno where I expect about 500 rwhp when we adjust vacuum pump

To the OP.... I'm thinking of doing the same build. I can't remember where I read it, but the formula I saw for 450-500hp from a 383 stroker was:

Fast intake
TSP stage 2.5 heads
custom cam
headers.

My list of parts currently sitting in the garage for this build is:

FAST 92mm intake w/ LS2 TB
TSP Stage 2.5 ported heads
EG Whiplash cam
Roller rocker arms
Fresh LS6 block
2" primary headers.

I'm hoping this will get me to at least 450-475 hp.

Good luck with your build.

Lots of good advice. Hard to get to 500hp on the LS1 w/o juice or FI. It would take a bunch of $$$ to get there if going just N/A. And as stated before, it probably wouldn't be very street friendly. And that primarily is why those threads always seem to end up with FI or nitrous. A guess-ti-mate on difference in price between home build and having a shop doing it would be in the $2000-2500 range. There's a lot of labor in turning it into a 383. And just the extra cubes would not get you to 500hp. If you kept all your current parts and just converted to a 383, maybe 400hp. You'd need a lot of other stuff just to get to 450hp. You wanted real life experience. I put in Fast 102, ported 90mm TB, big cam, ported 243 heads, Vararam, heads were milled for 11:1 compression, long tubes, etc.. basically just about everything I could think of (all done on stock LS1 - 346) and still only made about 420hp. I spent a LOT of $$ getting to that. If I'd have went to 383, I might have made 450-460hp. Just consider your options and decide what's best for you.
One last thing. As you read through the forum, how many 500hp N/A setups have you seen that used an LS1? I don't recall any right off the top of my head. I seem to remember Toque making 470 on his Z06. Nothing higher comes to mind. Of course, in the FI and nitrous sections, there's lots over 500hp. Hope this helps. Good luck.

I have 2 of them... One is doing it with a 346 and the other is a 382. The 382 may have a bit more torque but we're guessing both about the same HP, around that 500 mark.

Yes, they are a LOT of work and money. Don't believe all of the hype about a big cam on the street and no manners, my 346 is a daily driver as well, having 150K on the clock with about 60k on the motor.
Good luck with build

Headgames ended up with the heads ...

I currently have a 383 stroker and am at 500whp N/A it’s well worth the build and love the set up. It’s capable of whatever power I want with boost it will jump up to massive levels.

I thought about this route as well however deciding to go big CI staying NA in my quest for 500 whp as I want the big torque down low vs high rpm power. That and I plan on putting the LS1 in my Jeep.

We see many customers and even co workers build these for Corvettes to Cadillacs. Just takes time and

money.

The best thing to do is just watch the web for a pro build with a proven formula and copy it.

https://www.motortrend.com/how-to/17...orked-over-ls1

Kits are out there from Brian Toole Racing and others.

Just make sure to use the quality parts shown and make sure to add a better radiator to deal with additional heat from more HP. Also build up the drivetrain to take the added power. If there is a weak spot it will be exposed.
