Default Long distance trip

I just came back from a 2500 mile road trip from Fl to NJ because one of my kids was having her third child and I didn't know exactly when he'd arrive and how long I'd have to stay up there, so I drove my 2000 A4 up and back. I stopped in NC going up and coming back for an overnight to see a cousin, but each leg of the journey (FL to NC, NC to NJ) was 8 1/2 - 9 1/2 hrs. of steady driving, most of the time between 65 and 85 mph (don't tell anyone). While I was up there, even though I had another 1500-1600 miles to go, I changed the oil at a friend's house before the return 1100 mile trip because he had a lift that he brought it to his house that took from his garage before he retired. Everybody ought to have one of those, it should come with the car as standard equipment.
I took with me an assortment of tools, a jack, boards to put under the car and lift it, pucks, Techron, oil, a tire plug kit, an electric air pump, but - Needless to say, the car performed flawlessly, the only thing I had to do was keep feeding it gas every 4-5 hours or so. Attached is a shot of the dashboard during one leg of the trip, showing I averaged 30.4 mpg from NC to NJ. It's not surprising, as the engine is just loafing along at 2000 rpm at 70 mph, 2100 at 75, and 2200 at 80. For the rest of the trip I got between 28-29mpg.
The car was very comfortable, had my iPod plugged into the radio via a $3 cassette adapter, and just sat there listening to random tunes, as there's no radio stations worth listening to in GA, NC, SC, VA, or MD. All in all, I highly recommend taking the Vette on any trip, long or short, It's a great road car and quite miserly on gas at speed.

Thanks. It was, and a chance to see the family as well as my old friends that I haven't seen for 10 years or so.
And I didn't even burn one drop of oil and now my car has reached the 90,000 mile mark. These cars are pretty well made and solid.

I saw only 2 other Vettes on the road in all my 2500 miles and 45 hours of total driving, in 7 different states. I waved as I passed alongside me on the highway one guy in a yellow C6 and he looked like he had no clue what I did and never even acknowledged me. I think he bought that car just to show off or impress someone, but in my mind, he had no class at all. It seems like only the C5 guys acknowledge each other, or maybe the others only acknowledge their own.

Looks like you buddy has a Mohawk lift. I bought one of those used after I got my c5. They are built like tanks and made in the USA! Wish I had purchased one years ago.

Congratulations on your new grandchild and your successful long distance road trip. The Vette is a great traveling car and I love traveling in mine. I can't tell you how many trips my wife and I have made in it, but at least three to Bowling Green and two to southern Florida, countless others of lesser distances. Where in NJ did you go because up here in Jersey most Vette people DO wave, even one generation to another.

Each September I attend two reunions. One is in central eastern Ohio and the other one is in Kansas City. The one in Ohio runs Wed-Sun, and the one in KC runs the following Wed-Sun. Six years ago I decided to turn the two events into one big road trip and have been driving the Corvette to them ever since. In fact, I just returned from this year's festivities last week. Total round trip distance is just over 2,900 miles, including side trips. I've found the C5 to easily be the most comfortable car to drive that I have ever owned. I experienced similar MPG with my 2003. This year the schedule was such that the KC event was first. I drove from my home on the NC coast to KC in two ten hour days. These days the only thing causing me to have to get out of the driver's seat before needing to refuel is having to run to the men's room. They are truly great road cars.

I gotta tell ya, I only put 43k on mine but I loved it on long trips

Plenty of room for luggage (coupe), comfortable, good on gas and . . .well . . .you know . . .just great to drive

The attention you get on stops never gets old either

Road trips are fun...mostly. Congrats on you new grandchild. These are great cars....qualification, for a 15 year old car. Bang for the buck, you can't beat them.

I regularly drive my 01 Z06 back and forth from Orlando to Tampa (200 miles). Sometimes to Boca too. It's great because I get paid .56 cents per mile. I can and have rented a lot of new cars, but they are not as fun as the vette, and I really don't get anything in return.

C5's are great road trippers. I took my 6MN to French Lick/West Baden Springs IN over the weekend. My rpms are lower at 75 given the final drive ratio in 6th, but mpg is pretty similar. It was 4 hours each way, only used about half a tank each way.

Now, cruising route 62 in the Leavenworth/Corydon area in Saturday the mpg dropped considerably but the fpg was off the charts! (fun per gallon)

The Overlook restaurant in Leavenworth is a popular stop for Rt 62 enthusiasts.

Followed a 50th for awhile heading home until he turned off in Marshall. Yes he did wave.
