So a c5 for $10,500 will not be junk? Miles don't scare me, as long as they are easy miles. I have my heart on a white c5 coupe. Was the LS1 the base engine? Was the LS1 a dog? I know nothing of the LT LS engines for forgive my simple mind.
$10,500 can buy you a very nice Corvette. Just need to find the one that's right for you. Two engine options for C5's: LS1's in coupes and convertibles, LS6's in '01-'04 Z06 variants. LS1's are most definitely NOT dogs. Very reliable, great power, and take to mods like crazy. You won't be disappointed.
Coupes have a more rigid chassis, and are a little quieter due to better insulation than the soft tops. I'm sure someone else will have a more descriptive answer than mine though. It'll all be with it when you finally have your dream car!
"Lingenfelter" is a aftermarket performance company. They offer multiple performance packages for just about every generation of Corvettes I believe. On C5's that usually breaks down to larger heads/cam, intake, manifold, and supercharger. Worth getting into if you want a very fast car, not at all practical for a daily driver though.
Ok. Yeah, I don't need that. I prefer just stock. Were you getting anxious looking for your C5?
I was the first time. I bought a '00 Magnetic Red convertible when I was 22. It had 19k miles on the clock. I was in a truck at the time, and knew I had to get back into a sports car. I had always loved Corvettes since I was a kid, though I had never been able to afford one. Sold my truck, put a nice down payment on the vert, and the rest is history.
After I paid it off I contemplated putting some money into performance mods. The goal was the keep up with the new LS3 vettes. After a couple months of consideration, I decided to go a different route. I started looking at low mile '04 Z06's. They had the extra horsepower I was looking for, looked great, and were more reliable as I was looking for bone stock cars. I narrowed down the colors I was interested in first, and then looked for the best deal I could find.
Two years ago I found a beautiful Torch Red Z06, with the Mod Red interior I was looking for. 6900 miles, and priced just right. Took me a month or so to find. Had it inspected by a Chevy dealer in the area, and shipped to my door a week later. If you're patient, you'll know the right one when you find it. I love my Z06, especially now that I've done a few mods. Good luck my friend.
I noticed something on some c5s. In the pictures of the interior, there is a button on the center console ahead of the storage compartment. And on others I see the button with a dial switch on it. What is that?

The button is for traction control/active handling. One push disables both, holding the button for five seconds activates "competitive driving mode". (Active handling on, traction control off.) The dial is for cars equipped with Magnetic Ride Selection.
How come some have them dials and some don't? Were they only on later C5's?
Magnetic ride selection was an option, and an expensive one at that. Not every car has it. I can't say for sure if the earlier cars had them ('97-'99's).
Guy that bought my '00 vert had a '99 with 280k. It was still running strong. Someone on the forum just posted a 500k odometer pic. Sturdy engines for sure.

The guy with the 500k mile car is local to me.
Engine runs as smooth as silk, never been rebuilt or anything. I would say the ls1 is routinely capable of 300k miles if cared for properly.
