I was rolling along on the NY Thruway yesterday afternoon and in a pause between the songs heard a funny noise coming from the back - turned off the Slayer and listened closely - rrrrrrRRRRRRrrrrrRRRrrrRRRrrrRRRRRR - possibly the jet pump in the 2nd tank? Weird thing is that after a while it went away
It is definitely not the jet pump in the right tank. There is no motor on that side. It uses a venturi effect to move the fuel. The fuel pump is in the left tank immediately behind the driver's seat.
My pump gets louder the longer the drive. The sound it makes fluctuates if I turn my turn signal on. You may try that the next time you hear it to see if adding draw to your car's electrical system causes the sound to fluctuate. If it is the pump, it isn't necessarily a problem. They can be noisy.

Good idea about the turn signal - I tried getting on and off the gas that made no difference - I was scared it was a drivetrain thing.
