Default Question about climate controls

I noticed when looking at a car today that the passenger climate control **** has a white line to indicate the set position. The drivers **** has no such indicator, and the **** can be turned endlessly in either direction.

Can someone explain why this is designed this way?

The driver side will set the temperature on the led screen. The passenger one will increase or decrease that temperature depending on which way you turn the dial.

When the line is strait up it is set at the same as the drivers side, then it can be ajusted from there.to the right, warmer. To the left, cooler.
