Default Changing tranny and diffy this weekend

These videos were helpful. Also got notes from the forum on recommended fluids to use.

Question - is it essential that the car be level when this is being done - or can I just lift the rear? Actually - I'll be doing the engine oil as well - if I have enough jackstands it will in fact be level....

The car has to be level especially for the engine oil, the pan will not drain properly with the rear higher.

The guy who did the video made a huge mistake which can cause others to have a big headache..! For the diff fluid, you ALWAYS open the fill plug first, THEN, you open the drain plug, not the way he did, the other way around. Why? Because if you do it the way this guy did and drained your diff fluid and then you try to open the fill plug and it is stuck and you can't open it or damage it, you are screwed because now you can't put fluid back into the diff and you car is nonoperational.

Good point and thanks for the reminder - I usually open fill plug anyhow to help the drain go faster.

Of course no one around here stocks Amsoil or Red Line - I wound up with Royal Purple Max ATF - and since I had already purchased GM diffy additive I got the Valvoline synthetic which does not have the additive in it. This is like $200 in fluids - engine, trans, and diffy!

Actually incorrect, drain plug is on front of pan so if rear is higher it drains better.

It went OK - got it up level on jack stands and was done in 3h (diffy, trans, and engine oil). Getting the pump hose up into the tranny fill was a little tricky - on my back with the quart jug on my chest - but overall not bad. Didn't have a chance to road test it when I was done - curious to see if the Royal Purple makes a difference (for what they charge you the car should shift itself)! But I guess that wouldn't be any fun...

Are you kidding me right now?!?!?!?!

Next time you change your oil and it stops draining.... go ahead and jack the rear up higher than the front. Watch how much more old oil drains out!

One other strange thing - when I undid the diff fill plug I heard gas escaping?? I guess that means my axle seals are OK....
