Default C5 classic car

Hi, when will the c5 become a classic car? I am finding conflicting info. Some say 20 yrs and some say 25 yrs. Do we count from the year our cars are or from 1997, when the 1st c5 was made?

In Alabama, it'll qualify for a Vintage Tag when the car is 30 years old.

Thanks, didn't know that. I have a Vintage tag on my one owner '67 Mercury Cougar, but it was issued years ago. Looks like they do have some provision to display a year-appropriate tag with a vintage sticker attached, as long as the tag is legible or restored, for vehicles produced in 1976 or earlier. I'll have to check into that some more.

Texas has antique and classic tags. The cars have to be at least 25 yrs old. If you have a classic tag, you have to have annual inspections. If you have antique tags, you do not. You can run YOM tags for either classic or antique. That's what I have on my 68 (antique registration, YOM tags). The tags say "HEMISFAIR" at the bottom.

If you already have a Vintage tag you are allowed to keep it, but the state no longer issues new ones. I'm not sure of the provision for the year appropriate tags.

In Missouri I believe a car has to be 25 years old to qualify for antique license plates. So if I keep my car for another 12 years ..... and if I'm still around then.

It all depends on your state. Check your local DMV/BMV.

25 years or older in Virginia.
https://www.dmv.virginia.gov/vehicles/#antique.asp

Language:
If you plan to use your antique vehicle or trailer solely as a collector's item, you may register your vehicle with antique license plates or permanent vintage license plates.
Registering your vehicle either of these ways limits your use of the vehicle to:
Participation in antique car club activities, exhibits, tours, parades, and similar events.
Testing its operation, obtaining repairs or maintenance, selling the vehicle or trailer, transportation to and from events as described in number 1 above and for the occasional pleasure driving not to exceed 250 miles from your residence.
Carrying or transporting passengers, personal effects or other antique motor vehicles being transported for show purposes.
You may not use your vehicle for general, daily transportation. This includes, but is not limited to, driving to and from work.
In Virginia, it also alleviates you from having to get yearly Safety Inspections.

Here in WA, the "Collector Vehicle" plate is for cars 30 years or older. And these plates limit the type of use the car gets. Similar to the rules posted for Virginia but no single trip mileage limits . The car can't be use for normal driving use.

The is a one-time registration fee and only one plate is issued for the rear of the car.

Your vehicle must be at least 20 years old to qualify for an Early American antique plate.

To apply for the plate, send a completed Special Order Plate Application (Form M-22) and payment for the $96 fee to:

Department of Motor Vehicles
Customized Plates Unit
60 State St.
Wethersfield, CT 06161

Yes, but you must follow the requirements.
§ 67.6. Use of antique and classic registration plates.

No person may operate a vehicle with antique or classic registration plates for commercial purposes or for general daily transportation. Permitted use is limited to participation in club activities, exhibits, tours, parades and similar uses, and for occasional transportation. Occasional transportation means no more than 1 day a week.

It's also a 1 time fee at approximately $125's + an additional $100.'s for a vanity plate, and annual inspections. I had thought about it but I do like to take it on vacation once in a while and I'm not sure if I would be able to do that. I guess I could get around that if there were car shows in the area and visit them and take pictures while participating in the show.

Geez....how depressing. My C5 does not yet qualify for an antique or classic designation but by the yard stick used in years I am ancient, beyond antique and certainly no classic....I need to lie down now.

Interesting, and just to clarify, the counting starts at the year of the car not the year the make was first made?

The c5 sure is a classic car. I really enjoy mine and looking at others. It picks up my mood when feeling blue and when a week go by with no ride, I can't wait to get inside for a long drive.

Now, I see why I get conflicting info, its a state thing.
