Default Continental DWS06 driving impressions

After carefully reading many forum threads about tires, I chose Continental non-run flats. Steve, owner of Performance Tire in Orange City, Florida recommended Continental DWS06 non-run flats to replace the second set of Michelin run flats that were currently on my 2000 FRC. It is my daily driver and I average 14,000 miles annually. I do not street race (ever) and am careful to observe posted speed limits (somtimetimes I reach that limit faster than the other guy. You know, to blow out the carbon deposits).

The first thing I noticed immediately was that at a steady 35 mph, the exhaust note was noticeable for the first time. The stereo settings needed resetting, starting with the volume.

The interior is much quieter at all speeds. The tires do not track uneven road surfaces (the Michelins behaved like bias ply tires) and traffic lane reflectors do not jar the steering wheel as before.

The car does not respond as quckly to steering wheel input and it takes a little more effort to push the car out of the garage from a standing start.

The car behaves the same taking my favorite off-ramps.

The HUD and DIC (when setting cruise control) match GPS indicated speeds at all observed speeds. The analog speedometer has always lagged a little.

If handling is your top priority, you probably should consider some other
tire.

I am very happy so far. The car is quieter and smoother. I no longer include replacing loose dental fillings with annual tune up and oil changes.

Steve at Performance Tire hit a home run.

I purchased the DWS 06 tires a few months back, replacing the Goodyear OEM run-flats. I do not regret the decision as the Continentals are great tires. I live in California where the all season tires come in handy.

Thanks for your review. Never owned any Continental tires. Good to know the +/- on that particular tire.

I had them on my old C5, drove them hard several times on the curvy mountain roads here, they stuck pretty damn good, though they would spin a bit digging out of corners.. But hell so do most other street tires when ya stab the throttle

Overall a good tire, but they have softer sidewalls even among other non-run-flats so you'll lose a bit of that crisp turning you may be used to. Much as everyone else hates the Goodyears (which come on the Convertible Mustangs, and my hardtop for some reason). They wear fast, but they have a bit of a lip to protect the wheels from curb rash and very stiff sidewalls without compromising ride quality.

I had Continentals on another car (They used to come on BMW's from the manufacturer, not sure anymore) and that's what I experienced anyway.

The Michelin's had that safety lip you mentioned. It worked for me on one occasion. I met a man years ago who was a retired BMW North America engineer. I forget his exact title but his last assignment was to drive new designs around the country to look for design flaws. He told me that while a lot of math went into designing suspensions, it was empirical (seat of the pants) impressions that determined ride quality of the BMW's he tested. He lamented the trend towards stiffer suspensions and tires. Too bad one of us in the forum does not have anything better to do than test tire/wheel combinations all the time to keep us informed but it is such a subjective matter. What's your favorite color and
why? I am satisfied with the Continentals and in any case, the car far exceeds my driving abilities no matter what tires I run.
