Default Reverse lock out not working properly...manual trans

It happened once or twice in the past years but it's happened a half dozen times in the last month...

I go to shift gears into 5th gear and the shfter goes past and into the groove/channel for reverse and you'll hear some grinding if you don't get it pulled back out quick enough.

I have not had an incident where I had let out the clutch when this happens...that would be bad...very very bad I would think.

Has this happened to anyone else on here? Any ideas as to what might be the cause or what I might check? Any help is appreciated.

It may not be getting power/ground or it is bad. You can check the circut at the solenoid. I can provide that info later, not at home.

If you have to remove it the FSM says to lower the rear suspension to have access to remove it. I know plenty of people here that have not needed to do it. You will need a deep socket to remove it. It is at the rear top of the tranny. I can provide the FSM info if you don't find a Thread on it

I have the same issue RARELY in my C5Z. It will do it once every now and then, but the past several times that I have driven it(maybe once a month) it has not been an issue. I know its the solenoid but I have not gotten around to replacing it. I'm just careful on the 4-5 shift, and I can just tell when it goes into the reverse gate...I did grind reverse twice the second day I got the car, but then I realized it was an issue and haven't done it again!!!

My opinion is when you CAN shift into reverse at speed (above 5 mph) then it should be a faulty solenoid that is "stuck" in the "allow reverse" position.

DTC P0801 tells you how the circuit works.

DTC P0801

An ignition voltage is supplied directly to the Reverse Inhibit solenoid. The PCM controls the solenoid by grounding the control circuit via an internal switch called a driver. The driver supplies the ground for the component being controlled. Each driver has a fault line which the PCM monitors. When the PCM commands a component ON, the voltage of the control circuit should be low, near 0 volts. When the PCM commands the control circuit to a component OFF, the voltage potential of the circuit should be high (near battery voltage). If the fault detection circuit senses a voltage other than what is expected, the fault line status changes, causing the DTC to set.

When the Reverse Inhibit solenoid energizes, the operator can shift the transmission into reverse. The PCM enables the Reverse Inhibit solenoid whenever the vehicle speed is below 5 mph. When the vehicle speed is above 5 mph, the PCM de-energizes the solenoid, which prevents the operator from shifting the transmission into reverse.

For anyone with P0801 it is the solenoid, PCM, or a wiring issue.

At the solenoid, power is by a Pink wire. It is fed power when the ignition is ON. It is provided via Relay 42 and Fuse 19 in the engine fuse box. The PCM provides the ground via the Light Green wire.

First verify you have power on the Pink wire with ignition ON.

You could put the ignition ON and remove the connector and see if you hear the solenoid change state which would mean it is good.

In case it is the PCM then you could put the ignition ON and ground the solenoid to see if it changes state.

If anyone wants me to post the actual DTC I can.
