Couldn't believe some prices I've seen on auto fire extinguishers, so I bought a small marine extinguisher with mount from Walmart and mounted it to my speaker box.. I don't think it looks too bad for 10 bucks!
I bought it because something is better than nothing... Rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it. I keep one in my daily driver jeep too just because you never know when you OR someone else might need it.
If I was unable to get out I probably would be unable to use an extinguisher.
Once I had a Jeep that started on fire and the first thing I thought about was getting out, not grabbing a fire extinguisher.

That's great, don't buy one.. Like I said.. Rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it, for me, my car, or for someone else that may be thankful somebody had one.

Just saying, I have had them but I would not try to save my car with one. My first priority would be to get out. And if there is an under hood fire I would not recommend opening the hood.

I should have put LOL after my comment !!!! (was kidding)
Unless you are a trained firefighter, I would not recommend trying to put out a car fire with an extinguisher. You could get seriously injured.
In my training with as a FF, we were taught that MOST car fires could not be put out by a single extinguisher by the time one was available. If you happen to keep one in your car it's likely a small one and good ONLY if you're able to catch a small fire in it's early stages.
In today's computer-driven cars, fires really do a number on wiring. Really the only purpose I would see in putting out a fire with a small hand-held car extinguisher would be to prevent further damage or spreading of the fire so one can salvage things and prevent a larger disaster.
All that being said, I carry a small ABC Monoammonium Phosphate extinguisher in my car. The typical automotive extinguishers use sodium bicarbonate which has the advantage of being non-toxic and easy to clean up. My thought is that if something catches fire and needs to be put out, I probably won't be spending much time cleaning it afterwords.
Okey I know where this thread is going, lol. Are Corvettes know for fires and should I be worried about burned alive in one? Like the Ford Pinto. Now I am worried as I have no fire extinguisher and not sure if I am insured for fire!? Will my insurance rates increase if my car catches fire and is total loss. Whew, that should keep this thread going for a while. lol

If you have (and you should have) comprehensive insurance on your Vette, it is covered for fire. If you don't have it, get it.
If you have even a small fire in your Vette, you don't want it back.

I agree with you on the speed thing George. Depending on where the fire is located, rapid decision making is essential to fight or not fight.
I wanted to at least have a chance with an underhood fire (most common type) so I got a chrome (just for appearance) 5:BC Halotron I. No residue either.
