Default It finally happened........

Myself and my wife went for a Sunday cruise got about 10 miles from the house, the transmission quit shifting into 3rd and 4th. So I took the back way home along business 290. I was going along about 20mph in 2nd gear with my hazard flashers on. I noticed a sheriff's dept suv start following me. Well he hit his lights so I pulled over, he walked up and asked for drivers license and insurance. Then said is everything ok, I've never seen a corvette going so slow,,,,,,,I explained the problem with the transmission. Then he said it's illegal to drive with your hazards on?????? I said I'm just trying to limp home with a bad transmission. He replied where's home,,,,,,while still holding my license and insurance papers,,,,,wtf,,,,,any way he gave me my license back and said just drive on the shoulder .
Anyway does 2 grand sound right for rebuild? I got two bids $2000 and $2500.

Can't fault the LEO for at least asking what the problem was. No idea what a tranny rebuild would cost.

Could have at least done 40! Then the officer would have been pulling you over to ask why your car was screaming down the highway!

If that's with labor I think that sounds pretty good, a high performance rebuilt trans from rpm starts at around 2k for trans itself and go way up from there, plus core and labor of course.

It is illegal to drive with hazards on, many people don't know it, that's why he told you that!

That's interesting since I see it happen frequently? Just learned it myself. Those seem like good prices!

I'm not hating on law enforcement, I appreciate all they go through doing their jobs !! 1 in 5 or more drivers in Texas doesn't have insurance!! He was holding my insurance papers and drivers license and asking me where home was ,,,,,,

My car was recently damaged by a middle eastern driver with no insurance and they don't even get a citation for hitting my car or a fine for no insurance

They do that sort of thing on purpose, just like: do you know why I stopped you, do you know how fast you were going etc... Its all a test!

I am a LEO and I can assure that more often than not, the address on the License and Insurance papers(those that have addresses on them) is not correct. Glad that you did make it home safely and good luck with the transmission rebuild.

For what its worth, I had TDP-texasdrivetrainperformance.com rebuild my T-56 in my old Z28 and I was very pleased with the price and the results.

Sorry to hear about your transmission. The rebuild costs seem about right if you're looking for a stock level rebuild. If you want more, there are plenty of shops in Houston that can build it for you as well.

Interesting that the LEO pulled you for the flashers. i see people driving with them on all the time and never thought much of it other than to give them space.

Drunks drive too slowly as well as too fast . . . seeing a car- regardless of brand- that's not moving with the traffic flow is more than reason to stop to inquire if not render assistance.

And just because an address is on the paperwork doesn't mean you live there. The cop may have been there to assist if necessary- radio for a tow, etc . . .not sure why he was viewed as a problem.

Good luck with your car.

Well I did not know that, thanks, I'm surprised the leo got it wrong also. That may explain why so many people do it here anyway. In our heavy rain storms it makes it difficult to distinguish if a car is actually on the breaks or not with hazards on while moving.

How many miles on the trans, do you have mods and has the car been raced?

No racing occasional WOT, 159,000 miles, no mods, just aftermarket exhaust. Franks vettes in Spring Tx, $2k out the door, complete rebuild.

From what I've been told they have four clutch packs that have to be replaced, don't know too much about auto transmission

Good to know, mine has about 110K on a stock setup. I'm hoping to get it to 200K...

Sounds like the 3-4 clutches are toast. Computer applies pressure trims to get the shift times to match a programmed time. As the clutches wear the computer compensates until it can't compensate any longer and then things go south quickly.

Sounds like a good price if they know what they are doing.
